When God Stops The World

Exodus 10:22 – And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days:

Exodus 10:23 – They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

Hello, new blog today. And today I am going to be talking about coronavirus. It’s the buzzword. Most of everyone is in a state of panic and anxiety, there has been mass hysteria, and fear is engulfing the world. What a turn of events, in Australia where I live we’ve had mass bushfires and now here comes a deadly virus. But off the bat (no pun intended!), the Bible says in 2 Timothy 1:7 – For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. If you are saved, you should not be possessed by a spirit of fear. A spirit of fear is sweeping across the planet at the moment, but we have to remember our God is greater… God is greater and above and before all things. He uses the good and the bad, and he can and will use something like coronavirus for his will to be achieved. We have been looking at Job recently, but this was a guy who was struck with boils from head to toe… God lets evil happen to both evil and good alike, because he is going to achieve his divine purposes through it. Remember, it is humanity’s fault that there is good and evil in this world, we chose that pathway back in garden of Eden in disobedience to God. But maybe, just maybe God is using this to once again wake people up. This is a world that is content without him, content in sin, a world that wants normalcy without God’s involvement. Remember Samson, God let him marry a Philistine woman, not because it was good for Samson, but because he needed to wake Israel up! Israel were content under Philistine dominion, they never cried out for a deliverer. Only through being wronged by the Philistines would Samson, one man, be mobilized to do something about them… repentance might be a one man movement, but one can become as a thousand with God.

Looking at the country I live in and the world we live in… we are in serious moral decay and a nation becoming more and more destitute of the truth and light of the Lord Jesus Christ… and that is by choice… we can’t expect God to bless and protect when we’ve turned our back on him. Safety is of the Lord, but we’ve turned our back on God. God can use all sorts of events to try and jar us out of our sleep. It’d be good to read Ezekiel 8 and 9, but Ezekiel digged a hole in the wall and he saw what was really going on in the hearts and lives of the men and women of Israel, including the religious, in fact they were the worst. Maybe this coronavirus is to wake Christians up before anybody else. Maybe we’ve all lost our salt and light, and it’s time to get our saltness and lightness back by turning back to God. But in Ezekiel their backs were towards God, and they had said in their heart that God doesn’t see… God hath forsaken the earth. We live in a world with that attitude, that God is nowhere, that God doesn’t see, that God doesn’t hear, that God doesn’t do anything about anything. Even if we intellectually assent to God, he really isn’t involved at all in our lives, we live like he doesn’t exist, like he isn’t real. If you read Ezekiel 9 you will see that destruction came, and it came to anyone who wasn’t marked by God to be saved from that destruction. Why? Because they were not partaking in the sin of the land, in fact they were grieving over the abominations being committed in the land. We live in a sinful land, and without coronavirus that has suddenly bobbed up, we are already plagued by all sorts of things which are a result of us having completely turned our back on God and his word. Plagues aren’t only pestilence, sin is a plague in our lives, it causes plagues of doubt, of disobedience, of fear, of lust, of pride and so on. There are consequences to departing from God’s word, and when we go our own way thinking we know better, there are many harmful results of a lifestyle in violation of God’s word.

But the title of the blog is “When God stops the world”. You see, some countries are already, but more will be faced with everyone needing to stay in their houses. Things come to a halt. I like sports, but many sports have already been postponed or cancelled. Things have come to a grinding halt. This is a busy world we live in, so busy they are too busy for God. So occupied, so busy pursuing their ambitions, dreams, goals, and imaginations… they don’t give a flip for the gospel. There is no need for a Saviour. Truth is fallen in the street as Isaiah says. This coronavirus is a plague, and we have seen many plagues throughout history, from Biblical times to now. God has sent plagues, the first mention of plagues is in Genesis, and it was God who plagued a man because he had taken the wife of another man. That’ll get a plague on your life! Mankind always tries to get a scientific explanation or rationalization so that God doesn’t need to come into the picture. There was darkness over the land of Egypt for days (as quoted above from Exodus), but I guess we could come up with a scientific explanation for why that was so. Maybe the plague of frogs was due to an ecosystem imbalance. Or maybe it was God who is in control, the one who made all things… who has the power to ordain things as he sees fit at the time he sees fit. So they’ll say it comes from bats and unhygienic meat markets or a come up with a conspiracy theory, and maybe that is scientifically so, but God created the natural world and he works through real life events. Behind the natural, physical word is the spiritual world… which is more real than the physical word, and eternal, though we don’t see it with physical eyes! Job was going through physical realities, he physically had boils, his children had been killed when a strong wind caved the house in, and he had lost his thriving cattle business when robbers had taken them. So it was all scientifically explainable, but God was behind it. Why haven’t we had this virus before now? Because now is the time for it.

Something most people know about in the Bible is the plagues of Egypt. Egypt was a global powerhouse at this time in history, and the nation of Israel was there, and had become slaves. But they were God’s people, and God sent Moses to deliver them. The plan was to bring them out and take them into the land he had promised to Abraham, who is the man from which the nation of Israel comes and to whom God made promises many hundreds of years before. God always keep his word. But Pharaoh the king of Egypt wouldn’t let them go. Satan doesn’t want to let you go reader. He wants you to keep on as a slave in Egypt in his service. So God sent plague after plague by the hand of Moses to persuade Pharaoh to let his people go, and they did, they loosened his unwilling stubborn grip until he altogether thrust them out. The river was turned to blood, then there was a plague of frogs, then of lice, then of flies, then the livestock was killed by pestilence, then there was a plague of boils, locusts, darkness… and finally the killing of the firstborn children. It was pretty rough. Pharaoh’s stubborness shows how stubborn man is in his sinful state, you see, even after drought, bushfire, then floods, then viruses… mankind will still not repent towards God. Egypt is a picture of the world system in the Bible, of which we are all in, and it’s cursed. God wants to bring his people out, those who believe on him, he wants to bring them into a way of living and a land that he’s got for them. Ultimately that is heaven for the believer, but God has a promised land for your life here today, but that involves getting out of Egypt. Getting out of serving the devil in your mind, word and deeds, which is what you are if you are unsaved. It’s Jesus Christ or the devil, there is no third option.

But today I quoted the plague of darkness from Exodus. It is significant because with the darkness came a complete stop to business and activity in Egypt. They were forced to just sit in their houses and wait it out. Things completely stopped. That mighty empire came to grinding halt. Everyone stayed in their houses. We’ve seen in Italy recently, noone is allowed to leave their dwellings except to get some food. That was a real break in normalcy in Egypt when plague after plague came. Why didn’t it wake people up? Why would you keep serving Pharaoh? Why do people keep on serving the devil? Why not join a better team? The winning team? A shut down could be good for our lives. Maybe in a shut down it would be a good time to break from that busy life which distracts us from what matters to turn our focus to what and who matters… the Lord Jesus Christ. A time to consider things like what happens and where are you going when you die? Egypt was brought to a screeching halt, noone could do anything, imagine when the flies were everywhere corrupting everything. Egypt was a truth and light rejecting nation, they didn’t worship God, they did all sorts of abominable things. Before the plagues Pharaoh was in the baby killing business… sound like the world today? The abortion industry is booming. This world lies in darkness the Bible says, it is cursed, and you don’t have to be plagued. Does sin and it’s consequences and fruit veritably PLAGUE your life? Many people are plagued by sin, it’s fruit and it’s wages… because sin brings a plague upon your life. Adultery will plague your life. Alcohol and drugs will plague your life. Selfishness, bitterness and pride will plague your life.

Unfortunately the plagues can make people just harden their hearts even more. That is the most dangerous thing. Pharaoh kept “repenting” but then as soon as the plague was stopped, he flipped back to who he truly was. There were many people who left Egypt who didn’t truly believe God and in the wilderness, when their faith was tested… their true heart came out. They had never left Egypt in their heart. Many people turn to “God” in tough times, but as soon as times get better they get right back to their sin. That’s not real repentance. God can shut down the world if he wants to. He has the authority and power and ability to. He is Creator after all. Before Noah’s flood they were going about normal life, and yet in hours the world was destroyed… destruction and judgement can come a lot quicker than we think. We get so comfortable in normalcy and predictability of life, we’ve grown up in a time of relative peace and security… we don’t know those things can be taken in seconds. What is your life built upon? Could it be snatched out from beneath you in seconds? When Babylon falls in Revelation 18, the Bible says her plagues come in one day, and that the kings of the earth stand afar off and watch her judgement in amazement and disbelief saying for in one day thy judgement is come! They weep and wail over her fall. Will you be weeping and wailing over a wasted life, when everything you are and have is burnt up in seconds? Maybe all these world events that seem to be mounting up is God reminding us of his power and glory and judgement. We never feel so small and helpless than when in the grip of things so far beyond our control.

This ISNT a blog saying coronavirus is for unbelievers. Both believers and unbelievers suffer in this life. Look at Job, he got smitten with sore boils, look at all those martyrs in the days of Rome who got torn apart by lions, look around the world in countries where Christians are imprisoned, tortured and killed for just believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. But to balance this truth is that God does protect and keep his own. And God gives grace to all of us sufficient for the situations we are in. Noah was somehow uncorrupted in a world of incorruption, God kept him in a world that was full of violence and wickedness. And many of the plagues only happened to the Egyptians, because where Israel was dwelling in the land the plagues had no effect… so while Egypt was in darkness, the Israelites had light in their dwellings. Do you wonder why did God send the plagues? They were a judgement. It was God showing who he was, to loosen Pharaoh’s grip on his people. The plagues were wonders, what do wonders do? They get people wondering. It’s good to get you wondering about things that matter. Maybe in the face of the wonder of coronavirus, people will get to thinking about eternity and what really matters in life. God used the plagues to loose the children of God from the children of the world, to put a separation between them. It is a wake up call to those that name the name of Christ. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:19 – Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. God wants to loose us from our affinity to sin and this world, to see sin for what it really is, to depart from evil, to get out of Egypt. When God intervenes it’s for our good.

There were both Israelites and Egyptians who left Egypt after the plagues, but many only really left for the wrong reasons, and in the desert they were found out. There will be life beyond the coronavirus, will it be a life straight back to where you were beforehand? The plagues should cause them to repent, but it might only illict a repentance till the plague is over. The plagues showed the power and glory of God. The coronavirus is invisible to us, yet we fear it. God is invisible, but we don’t fear him, and he is greater than some virus. The plagues were to get his people out of there. Are you where you shouldn’t be in life? Maybe God can use this coronavirus to get you out of where you shouldn’t be. Are you in a life of slavery to sin? It’s time to get out. What ultimately loosened Pharaoh’s grip was the death of the firstborn children. The Israelites didn’t suffer that plague because the blood was on their doorposts. Is the blood of Christ applied to your heart by faith? There will be no leaving Egypt without the blood applied.

So God has stopped the world before. He stopped Egypt. He can change things in a second. You know, if God’s word were obeyed we wouldn’t have this virus in the first place. There are many animals that are unclean in the Bible such as bats, and because principles taught in the Old Testament are ignored (like to do with what to eat and not to eat and principles of sanitation and hygiene), this virus has gotten into the human populous. There are many principles taught in God’s word which are the proviso for clean, safe, good, holy and pure living. Principles and laws which when obeyed caused Israel to be the head of the nations, a nation that other nations would say of them “surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people”. God’s laws are for our GOOD after all, they are not grievous, obeying them doesn’t make them saved, but they are great guidelines for a good life here. We wouldn’t have HIV if people didn’t rebel against God’s word, that is an ongoing pandemic and has been for many decades. These viruses are the result of a world in sin, they weren’t there till man disobeyed God. Pestilence was one of the plagues of Egypt, but it isn’t the only thing this world is plagued by. It’s plagued by darkness, by sin, that’s even worse than coronavirus, with eternal ramifications. Hopefully this plague gets people thinking… of course many won’t repent… if they don’t repent in Revelation with far worse things happening, of course they won’t repent over something like this. But at the individual level, maybe there is that one person who will stop and truly consider. There were many plagues, but God had the power to stop each one. He has the power to forgive and heal your sin plagued life. Viruses are proof we need God. The same God who can stop the world. Maybe when the world is stopped is when your life will truly start.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 32 y/o Bible Blogger. I was new to blogging once! God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to bring it to others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ and I am a Lord Jesus Christ follower. He is faithful even though I rarely am to him. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and stake my life on it. My destination is heaven. As they say, I’m just a passin’ through this world… although most of the time it’s more like hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports – particularly cricket… I currently work on an orchard and a side hobby business of mine is growing vegetables etc – they are good for you! I love writing. Always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment. You can read more about me and my blog here – kjvbibletruth.com/about :)
