Defeating Sihon And Og
Psalm 135:10 – Who smote great nations, and slew mighty kings;
Psalm 135:11 – Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan:
Deuteronomy 3:11 – For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.
Hello readers, today I am going to be talking a little about Sihon and Og. They were the two kings of two nations the Israelites defeated before they entered the promised land. It is suspected that bother are, but we know for sure that at least Og was a giant. Israel faced giants in the wilderness, and then in the promised land. It was a giant called Goliath that David defeated many years later. Giants are all through the Bible. It’s for a reason. We will all face giants in life. If you are saved, there are giants that are going to test your faith and keep you out of the promised land and out of victorious Christian living unless you have the capacity to believe God.
There is a giant opposition to getting saved and then following Jesus Christ. Giants come in many forms, your giants may be different to mine. It can be sin in our lives or whatever. They’re a big deal to us, and they stop us from believing and obeying God. We often rather we didn’t have them to face, but they sure exercise our faith! Sihon and Og were kings that God enabled Israel to conquer out in the wilderness. See, after defeating these guys, surely they’d know they can trust God. They could enter into Canaan in full assurance of the faithfulness and power of God. Maybe you need help believing God, in knowing you can do it. Well God will give you victory, just start trusting him where you are at in life and how you know how to today.
I have been reading in Deuteronomy about how the spies went into the promised land, the land promised and given to their father Abraham, and they went in to search it out and report back to the Israelites who were waiting expectantly in the wilderness. And they came back, and the report was that sure it’s a great land and the fruit of it is good… however we can’t do it guys, the people there are giants, their cities impregnable. The spies instilled fear into the people, they told them how they couldn’t do it. Numbers 13:33 – And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. They saw giants in there. They’d never really faced a giant before. We can’t do it. They didn’t trust God. So they didn’t go in.
All Israel had needed to do was trust God, believe what God had said. But no, that entire generation didn’t enter in because of unbelief. God has a Canaan for each of our lives, it’s the place God wants to take us to. We are called out of Egypt to go into Canaan. That’s what true salvation is, its saved out of sin into a life of walking in the Holy Spirit. Toil and slavery to a free and fruitful life. God doesn’t just save you, but he will change you. There’s a new direction and destination that comes with true salvation. But there are giants there. We all have giants to face and overcome in our lives. How do you overcome the giant of pride, or lust, or bitterness, or selfishness, or greed, or whatever has a hold on you? How do you overcome this world and all it has and throws at you? There are so many giants. And they are giants for a reason. They’re bigger than us, there’s no way we can even see ourselves defeating them, let alone doing it. Well congratulations, you have realized what God wants you to realize. No, you can’t do it! But God can, so trust him. It’s always been about faith. God made the promises to faithful Abraham, he’s looking for people who will just simply trust him.
In defeating Sihon and Og, God gave Israel a taste of victory before entering the promised land. This is part of the Christian life. Hey you can trust me. This is what defeating a giant is like. God will give you victories, so you know that he can be trusted. They may be small victories in your life, just a victory here or there, but you gotta start somewhere, and they lead to bigger victories as your faith grows and God leads. It’s funny how it’s almost like all what happened in Egypt and in the wilderness didn’t count. As if it wasn’t great enough and proof enough already. We are so unbelieving. But God in his mercy may give a Sihon, an Og, into your hands. Israel whipped these guys. Giants can be beaten. They weren’t even in Canaan!
Today I’m not going to bother even trying to motivate you or inspire you, I’m not going to say believe in yourself… because that’s all garbage. But I’m telling you, you can trust God’s word. If you believe and obey God’s word, God will give you victories. Not because you’re great, but because he is. Don’t believe in yourself, believe in God and his word. God had told them the land was theirs, it belonged to them. God told them to go in. So they knew God’s word, and when you get in God’s word and know what you should do, God will give you the ability to do it. Not because you’ve got anything, but because he always delivers on our behalf. Maybe just get up and go to battle, you gotta start somewhere. Just do, by faith.
You know, some of the tribes after those victories thought, hey, this land will do me. God destroys a giant from before you, and we are happy to stop there and live in that land. Nevermind the fact it wasn’t the actual destination. Often some of us stop after one giant is defeated. Sihon and Og were destroyed, and two and a half tribes said we’ll take this land. We are satisfied with this far, but no further. You know, God can take you all the way… not just part of the way. Those victories were to give them confidence to go in to Canaan in faith, knowing God delivers on his promises. How much grace God shows in our day by day life, giving us deliverance after deliverance. Why do we stall and go backwards so much? It was the mercy, goodness and grace of God. Baby steps for this new generation after their fathers had wasted out in the wilderness in unbelief. Don’t waste your life in the wandering of unbelief. It just takes faith. That’s what pleases God. The victory that overcomes this world is faith. Do what God says trusting him. You’ll find he also supplies the power and ability to obey him. He is always faithful. You might find that towering giant before you… that he can be toppled.
Maybe you’re out in the wilderness, you’re not in the promised land. God can give you victories out there even. Victories that help you to believe and trust God more. Victories on the way to Canaan. You see, Sihon and Og were on the way to Canaan. Whatever things are stopping you on your journey to Canaan, towering up before you, wanting to make you stop and go no further… well by faith push on and through. You can know those giants in the land, they can be beaten. You can possess the land. You go the land where the fruit is abundant and good. God wants your life to be fruitful, full of the fruit of the Holy Spirit. A life that counts, a life that possesses God’s promises to you by faith. You can’t do that in unbelief.
We are all on a journey in life, and on that journey there are giants. There are many things in this world today that seem like giants. Just look at how this world thinks, what it’s doing, where it’s heading, it all seems so gigantic… but they’re no match for God. It was God that delivered Sihon and Og into their hands. God can and will give you the victory, because he is the one who goes to fight, all he requires of us is to trust him, believe what he says. And that begins with salvation, repenting of your sin and trusting Jesus Christ to save you. And it never stops being faith, after being saved by faith, then walk in faith every day, trusting God just like you did the day you got saved. Giants will fall before you, yes they’re big, yes they’re impossible, yes they drive fear into you… but trust God, the giants are no match for him, today is the day. You know the giants you face, well you can by faith trust God, and do what he wants you to do, and go where he wants you to go, and watch that giant disappear and you didn’t have to do anything other than just trust and obey the Lord.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 32 y/o Bible Blogger. I was new to blogging once! God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to bring it to others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ and I am a Lord Jesus Christ follower. He is faithful even though I rarely am to him. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and stake my life on it. My destination is heaven. As they say, I’m just a passin’ through this world… although most of the time it’s more like hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports – particularly cricket… I currently work on an orchard and a side hobby business of mine is growing vegetables etc – they are good for you! I love writing. Always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment. You can read more about me and my blog here – kjvbibletruth.com/about :)
