Are You Wishing For The Day?
Acts 27:29 “Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.”
Hello readers, on a cold Monday night in Adelaide, after a glorious sunny day! Just a quick thought from the book of Acts that I’ve had for a little while.
Here in Acts 27 there is a shipwreck story, where Paul as a prisoner is on a ship headed for Rome that gets caught up in a great storm.
And that storm takes complete control of their ship, and they have no control over it, no matter how hard they try otherwise.
Maybe you’re fighting some foul winds in your life which are driving you where you don’t want to go… and you’re fighting it… but losing!
They found that the wind was greater, so eventually they just had to let the ship drive, at it’s mercy rather than in control, and we don’t like to not be in control!
All that was left to do really was to trust God’s word and pray.
… which is quite a good position to be in! Though we don’t like to be put in that position when things are out of our hands!
But I was thinking about this phrase “wished for the day” from the verse quoted above.
Where I live we’ve had a whole lot of cloudy, dark, rainy days in the last few years, and sometimes, but particularly in winter, you do wish for the day! You’d love to see the sun come out!
It’s a pretty welcome sight to see the sun. Ecclesiastes 11:7 “Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun:”
That’s exactly what the people on the ship were hoping and looking for! They would have loved to see the sun!
Have you ever been in bad times and longed for better times, have you longed for sunny days!? I think we all have. They certainly were!
And when thinking about this phrase “wished for the day”, I thought about long nights I’ve had in my life, nights which never seemed to end.
And we can all go through long nights in our life, both literally, but also figuratively, in terms of night seasons of our lives where we just seem to be in black darkness spiritually speaking.
I don’t know what you’re going through right now, but maybe you, dear reader, feel headed for the rocks, on the rocks, in the storm, out of control, in great trouble, out of ideas… and wishing for the day in your life.
Well I’ve got good news from God’s word!
… And that news is that daybreak is coming! The day of Christ is coming, and in more ways than one!
If Abraham saw Jesus Christ’s day, and he saw it and was glad… so will you be in your life, if your hope is in him.
When we are going through bad times, we often just can’t see a life and future beyond the bad times we are in… but yet we always come through the other side.
With Jesus Christ… you can and will make it to the other side!
When I thought about “wished for the day” I thought about Jacob as he left Peniel after a very long night fighting with God… and the Bible says “And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.”
Yeah maybe God is doing something major in your life, as he was in Jacob’s life, and maybe he is putting a “halt” to some things in your walk of life… so you can walk better with him in his blessing!
I don’t know what he’s doing in your life, but I know that after that long night of fear, anxiety, distress and wrestling God… the day of Christ finally broke in Jacob’s life as he left as “Israel”.
You can just imagine the warmth he felt of the sun on his back as he left that place where God had so fundamentally changed him forever. That would’ve been such a great morning, and such a welcome sight as the sun rose that day.
I don’t know how many sunrises you’ve seen, but sunrises can be very beautiful, and I pray that if you are going through something bad in your life, and you can’t see life or existence or hope beyond it… I pray that the Sun of righteousness will arise with healing in his wings for you in accordance with the scripture.
Jesus said that he is the light of the world. That daybreak you are looking for is Jesus Christ in your life. Anything else is a false dawn. So trust Jesus Christ! Today is the day. He is the bright and morning star.
Yes, we all will spend some time wishing for the day in our life, but hang in there! Stay with ship, you are going to make it to shore!
You will see light again, and maybe the next time the day comes, with the breaking of a new day in your life, with it will be you seeing Jesus Christ a whole lot better, in a new light and with new appreciation, which is God’s work in all our lives.
God bless and have a great week!

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side. “maybe he is putting a “halt” to some things in your walk of life… so you can walk better with him in his blessing!”. Thank you Joseph for this encouragement! Always encouraged by your posts.

Thanks for the comment Stephanie, haven’t heard from you for a while!
2023 has been a topsy turvy year for me! I think you may be right, whatever God is doing, he’s doing it for our (my) good, even if there are seasons of heaviness and wondering what on earth is going on involved!
I noticed you’ve started a blog, I didn’t realize you had blogged on your fb, I also write stuff on my fb, sometimes it’s the same as what I post here but sometimes not too as I try to keep my fb post word count lower.
Anyway feel free to add me, I’d be happy to read what you write, once again thanks for the comment, have a great day 🙂

Thanks Joseph for always taking the time to reply to comments ! I’ll pray for the rest of your 2023 and for the Lord to sustain your strength in these difficult days. I am these days focusing on finding joy in God even if the rest fails- like we see in Habakkuk 3:17-19. Your blog continues to be a blessing to me and for sure to many- take heart in the fact that “God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love”. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
Thanks also for visiting my blog ! As for FB, will do, Lord willing when/if I reactivate it. Have a great day too 🙂
