Yoga And The Christian, A Yoke Of Defilement

Job said in Job 14:4 “Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.”

What does this mean? Well take “yoga” for instance, that will be the “case study” for this verse.

To a Bible believing Christian, yoga is (or should be) a very unclean practice.

Why? Because yoga is deeply rooted in Hinduism, a widespread religion diametrically opposed to the God of the Bible and salvation through Jesus Christ.

Yoga is way more than just a few “poses”, and it’s a trojan horse in many Christian’s lives, because it is very damaging to a Christian’s doctrine, understanding of God and spiritual growth.

Yes that may take a little time or a long time for it’s effects to manifest and take hold, but rest assured, yoga is unBiblical and will lead you to false personal truths far away from THE truth in Jesus Christ.

What Job said here should be a guiding principle for the child of God living in this world who doesn’t want to get hopelessly tangled up in a web of Satan’s lies. If God has delivered you from the power of darkness, why would you want to go back?

As Christians, we constantly try to bring clean out of unclean, but God commands us in 2 Corinthians 6:17 to “… touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you.” So don’t touch the unclean at all, rather than trying to bring something clean out of it!

There are many examples where Christians are violating this principle. Like when churches study movies like “The Matrix” “Lord of the Rings” “The Shack” to draw spiritual truth from.

Or what about using rock music to praise God? Worldly music that has it’s roots in Satanism cannot be successfully adapted for the acceptable worship of Jesus Christ.

And indeed, violation of this principle is why much of modern Christianity is far more a reskinned version of Hinduism than “the faith once delivered unto the saints”, as many popular Christian figures lead masses into eastern philosophy rather than sound Bible doctrine.

And boy, as I’ve studied a little on Hinduism/Buddhism, I’ve realized that modern Christianity has taken after these religions far more than the Bible “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;” It’s really bad, but just read books by popular “Christian” authors… it’s basically eastern philosophy and witchcraft with a “Christian” face.

But let’s get this straight, from God’s word, from this verse in scripture, that it is a grave mistake to believe that as a Christian, you can “take the parts you like” and “leave the rest”.

With relation to the example of yoga, heaps of Christians these days do “Christian yoga”.

Yoga has been greatly adapted to the West and “Christians”, but no matter how you alter it to suit what you are trying to get out of it, yoga is still a Hindu practice.

As a sidenote: note that “the love of money is the root of all evil” holds true with yoga. Because in order to get your mantra and learn yoga, you need to pay for each lesson and instruction. So if yoga truly is a way to God and truth, which it is intended for, then you are in essence having to pay for your salvation.

Yes, many Christians are quite ignorant about yoga, and they, like many people Christian or not, use yoga for varied wellness benefits that they covet without necessarily realizing it’s true nature. Which is ironic given that yoga is basically the path to “self realization”!

Firstly, the word “yoga” itself should be a giveaway, because yoga means “yoke” “link” and “union with God.” Because Hindus use yoga as a way to “God” and the “God life”, because linking with “God” is essential to personal spiritual ascension out of your problems and issues in life.

But to truly understand what that means and what yoga is trying to achieve, you first have to understand that the Hindu concept of God is vastly different to what the Bible teaches about God. For example, Hindus believe that “God” is in everyone and in everything, which is called pantheism.

As such… God is in you, they believe, but you just need to be liberated, and yoga is the way to transition from your false self to your true self that you’re yet to “realize”. This is because Hindus believe that the problem between man and God is disconnectedness with God, hence where yoga comes in, which is about connecting with God.

And so with this distorted concept of God Hindus view this world and the issues of life in this world. Take suffering for instance, Hindus believe that you are getting what you deserve. And that leads to not even helping people suffering, because that would be interfering with their reincarnation cycle that they are locked in to as they play a perpetual good karma bad karma reward and punishment game. Hinduism is basically like a social credit system.

But basically put, yoga is a tool and science used to purify and cleanse the practitioner from disconnectedness to God, “bad karma” and imperfect knowledge which is preventing their personal evolution to self perfection and ultimately nirvana (the Hindu idea of heaven, which is a state rather than a place).

Hopefully I haven’t confused you, but basically put, yoga is a series of physical, mental and spiritual exercises designed to bring you to a state of “true self” realization, spiritual “awakening”, and higher consciousness “the best version of yourself” through achieving oneness with the divine “God” within. When people talk about being connected to earth, land, nature and God, know that you’re dealing with eastern philosophy.

Obviously, this is all very unBiblical. And the Bible is very clear in denouncing the supreme errors of Hinduism and yoga. “Touching” yoga violates this principle in Job, but also yoga itself violates this principle of Job. How so? Well, because through yoga, you’re trying to bring the clean person or reality and consciousness out of the unclean person in yourself. Because remember, Hinduism says there’s a divine godly person in there just waiting to be “released” and “realized”!

Sorry not sorry to burst your bubble though, because the Bible states that “we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” and that “every man at his best state is altogether vanity”. In other words, there is no answer, solution, redemption, wholeness, fullness, completeness or divinity in any of us. We cannot solve our condition, and in Hinduism, they cannot even identify the problem much less fix it. Yoga cannot heal the curse of sin or link you to the true God who is separated you by your sin, and a condition which he heals through his own power, because we do not have any.

So where yoga seeks to bridge the gap between us and “God” and cross the divide that we know as Christians comes from the curse of sin… not an imperfect consciousness and yet to be realized reality… the Bible teaches that man can only be made right with Creator God through Jesus Christ, and salvation is a gift received by grace through faith… not by anything we “work” and do.

And where yoga is described and thought of as a “spiritual journey”, the Bible teaches that spiritual life only begins when you are born again by the Spirit of God when you believe in Jesus Christ. And until then, no matter how balanced and centered and mastered you are, you are and remain spiritually stone dead in your sins, separated from and at enmity with God.

Yes, yoga does attract and seem like a “right way” for many people, it is somehow seductive even to Christians, but yet the Bible warns “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Yoga will produce death in your life. It won’t stop you from physically suffering and dying, nor will it heal your lost spiritual condition. It is a bunch of exercises that only exercise you in self deception and devil oppression and possession.

Yoga is a lie. And the greatest lie is that when you die, you either advance up the reincarnation ladder or go backwards but with a never ending although excruciating opportunity to rise again. But the Bible says that if you die in your sins, there is no reincarnation, no second chance “it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment”. It’s going to be a big shame to realize the lie of yoga about who and what you are too late in hell.

So if you’re a Christian dabbling in yoga and other unclean things, it is time to reconsider what you’re doing, because it’s a dangerous path, and while we all prone to the thought that we are the exception, the fact remains that nobody can bring a clean thing out of an unclean. Yoga will yoke you… but not with God, and soon enough you will be in lockstep with the devil. Because yoga, like any other unclean thing, will get you in the end, even if it may be a slowly burning fuse to start.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side. 1. Hi Joseph

Thanks for speaking the biblical truth to society through your blog. I think sometimes you could be a little more sensitive in the phrases you use when laying truths down but that will come as you continue to spend time with Him. 🙂

I wanted to ask you your opinion on the theme of rock music as mentioned in your yoga blog. You said, ‘Worldly music that has it’s roots in Satanism cannot be successfully adapted for the acceptable worship of Jesus Christ.’ I agree that rock music generally lends itself to worldliness. However, at what point do you say that worship music is Satanic? Does it have to only be classical to avoid this? And then, is classical music implicitly Godly? Does a music group with drums and/or a guitar become less righteous than one with piano with flute for example? 🙂

I’m also interested to know what your thoughts are regarding exercise that is similar in physical approach to yoga. For example, if I were to stretch my muscles in a similar way to a yoga pose purely for the health benefits, would this be the same as complying with Hinduism?

    Thanks

    • Hey Simon,

Yeah you are right, but I’ve found also I can’t be sensitive enough to people’s endless sensitivities and so while I try to be sensitive, there always seems to be an issue if they want to find it too. I don’t seek to offend and sometimes my matter of factness can be taken that way, and if so apologies. Sometimes there’s no other way to say things rather than direct too.

With regard to worship music, it is a little bit of tough one, but also not really too. I think the best thing is to explore scripture for yourself regarding music and musical instruments and the intention of music. And then look at what it is, what it’s producing, what it’s feeding. Is it feeding our flesh or our Spirit? On my fb feed somehow the algorithm at the moment is feeding me some “Brandon Lake” and “for King and Country” and also “Cory Asbury” and before even hearing them speak for themselves like in interviews, just one look at them and their music, I don’t think it takes spiritual genius to figure out what’s going on. Basically put, in the music scene at the moment, market savvy musicians have figured out there’s a nice market for worldly music with a Christian flavour. Stick some Jesus lyrics and rip some stuff from the Bible to make money and draw in some crowds for your gigs and you’re set. It’s more worldly than world these days. I don’t think it’s too hard if you’re truly wanting to honour Christ to figure out what is godly and God honouring and what is all flesh. The Holy Spirit will let you know that’s for sure.

As for yoga, well really it’s the conscience that defiles. I could do a “cat cow” not knowing it’s “yoga” and big deal, but if you have a defiled conscience doing it, knowing it’s “yoga” and for the intention of performing yoga then there is an issue.

Titus 1:15 “Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.”

Romans 14:20 “For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.”

Tried to answer my best mate, and all the best for you, the Bible has the answers, seek it out, seek HIM out on it. God does promise to give us heavenly wisdom from above in James, all we need is but ask. For anyone truly wanting to honour Christ, he makes it pretty easy to do so 🙂

      • Thanks for the detailed reply. I don’t think you were particularly offensive, but I did think you could be more careful with the way you word stuff, not for the sake of political correctness or anything like that, just for the sake of speaking the truth in love. Regarding the issue with causing offence – the gospel should be the only ‘offensive’ thing, not how we communicate it. 🙂

Thanks for your thoughts about worship music. It’s interesting what you say about musicians using the bible solely for monetary gain. I’m from the UK, and I can’t see that happening here much. Proportionally, not many people buy Christian music here especially. I guess that’s more of a US thing.

I guess it’s tricky being a Christian musician – you want to avoid being influenced by marketing trends or tied down by contracts but also want to honour the place where God has put you. I’m sure some of the musicians you mentioned have gone into the music industry with integrity and a desire to make a difference. I think we need to be careful not to write them off because they’ve made mistakes.

      • Thanks for your thoughts Simon

Music is very powerful, and there is a heavy praise and worship emphasis in modern Christianity which is taking away from the preaching of the word. That is unarguable where I live at least.

Most of the modern music appeals to the senses and emotions, not to the truth. If people love the Christian music but hate the Bible… you know there’s an issue.

People are trying to sneak people into the kingdom “some other way” by appealing to them through the lure of music and hey you can have this music AND be saved…

The Bible is clear it’s the preaching of the word that saves.

And the intention and motive may be “right” … which is doubtful anyway, because none of our motives are as good as we think if we are being brutally honest, and we can be seriously deceived about ourselves… but nonetheless, even with good intentions it still can be all wrong. 1 Samuel 6, they had a good motive and idea… to bring the ark of God back… they agreed it was right, but disobeyed God in how they did it.

Their mistake was critical, it cost Uzza his life.

Like Israel using a new cart, which was a Philistine method, not the method to transport the ark as prescribed by God’s word… using rock music as a vehicle for Jesus Christ is incredibly confusing and deceptive and not carrying the blessing of God upon it.

Everyone has their own gift, some in music, but Jesus said they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. So if we want to create worship music for Christ, they are the key ingredients to acceptable worship to him. Cain went to worship God one day, but he didn’t obey God in how he did it. Then he got mad, and modern Christian music is definitely a sacred cow of today which if you dare to touch the issue, people will get mad!

Blessings, and have a good day 🙂 Joseph

      • Hi Joseph

Thanks for your response. Totally agree with you that if people love the music but hate the bible then there’s an issue. To be honest, I wasn’t really aware of that happening on a wide scale. In the UK, modern rock worship music, although accessed by Christians, isn’t as much of an influence as it seems to be in the US. I think the culture over here is perhaps more secular and therefore, generally, if you aren’t interested in the church, you won’t be interested in worship music. There are some good Christian rap artists that are speaking truth to society though.

      • That would be interesting to hear, because rap music is generally quite an angry, bitter style of music, if you can call it music, hence all their “diss” tracks where they use their music to basically annihilate someone with words. That or its all about drugs and sex and violence. Just look at it’s association too, as soon as you hear the word “rap” you think of a certain look and lifestyle and sound, attitude and spirit.

New worship music is inescapably central to what we see in departure from the faith today, we can just look at the example of “new worship” in Exodus 32, when they made the golden calf, the music was the first thing Moses and Joshua heard as they hurried down the mount. The sound they were hearing wasn’t what was supposed to and recognizably involved in praising the Lord, it was stuff they had learned and brought with them out of Egypt and were “adapting” and “fashioning” into the worship of God “and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the Lord.”

I’ve listened to a lot of wordly music in my life, and I’ve still got a taste for it, but I know it’s worldly, but as more time has gone along I’ve begun to realize just how much it affected me without realizing. The devil is in the detail, and we all really cannot stick close enough to God’s word and like with the law of leprosy… a spot may or may not be a problem yet, and it only looks small… but there is the old “ish” principle, reddish or greenish… when someting looks suspicious but not sure yet… best to heed the warning sign early and avoid some things when you’re not quite sure about them, even if sometimes it’s not quite clear yet either way. But that’s for every Christian to figure out for themselves too, how expedient is this music for myself and my testimony?
