Don’t Forget God

Psalm 9:17 – The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

Hello readers, been thinking about forgetting God. I am not just guilty of this, but quickly guilty of this. You want to know the speed at which we can forget God? In Luke 17, the Lord Jesus Christ healed ten lepers. They pleaded for him to have mercy on them, and Jesus did. He commanded them to go and shew themselves unto the priests, and as they were going, they were cleansed. This was a miracle. Leprosy was a death sentence. But out of the ten, only one turned back to thank Jesus Christ and glorify him.  They forgot about God in the very moment they were cleansed.

I’ve been thinking about times I’ve forgotten God. Which isn’t hard. Because I live in a constant state of forgetting God. I’ve got much to thank God for and there are many things and times in my life where I know God has intervened and delivered me or saved me when I have not deserved it. And how quickly I’ve forgotten is alarming. I’ve been forgetting him but he hasn’t forgotten me. Why has he showed that grace to me? And the grace of God is very precious, it is not to be despised and made contemptible like we make a practice of. Ultimately, God provided Jesus Christ for my sins when I didn’t even know I needed salvation. Just think about that, before you were even born, God already knew what you needed and had provided for what you needed. Jesus had already died on the cross for your sins. That should put something in you which not just doesn’t want to, but can’t forget God.

Before we talk a bit about forgetting God, first I want to talk about “getting” God. To forget God, you need first to “get” God. 1 John 5:11,12 “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” The way you need to get God is through personal salvation. Most people only get God in terms of knowing about him, but they never get him in terms of receiving the truth of his word by faith. If you do not get God through repentance and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ, you do not have God, and you are going to hell. If you do not get God, you do not have forgiveness. If you do not get God, you do not have eternal life. You must have the  Son, and you receive him by faith. It’s not going to be good enough just to have known the truth, if it didn’t change your life and produce a new birth, it’s not good enough.

The nations that forget God… they never got God. They knew about him, but then they forgot him. It never went from head knowledge to heart reception. They might have had a Bible, well Jesus Christ walked and talked and healed and preached in the cities of Israel, yet most went to hell. It wasn’t enough to have heard him or seen him or been in his presence even, they had to actually get him. The problem is most people do not get him, and do not get “it”. Why do people not get it when it comes to his word? Because they never got him. If you don’t get God’s word, you don’t get Jesus Christ either. I am constantly amazed at the amount of Christians out there with a Bible free Christianity. Spirit, spirit, spirit they say, but they have no idea what spirit they are of. You cannot know anything without God’s word. How can you have truth if you reject the foundation of truth? You cannot reject God’s word but have Jesus Christ, for rejecting God’s word IS rejecting Jesus Christ. That is Biblical fact.

God’s word isn’t just a good idea, it’s not a cheese platter from which you take your favorites at your leisure. God’s word is a command. It is a command to repent. It is a command to be saved. It is a command to be born again. It’s not a good idea, Jesus said ye MUST be born again. If that word of God didn’t find good soil in your heart it will be better for you if you had never heard the word. You will be held to account for what you did with the light given you. In my nation, we’ve been given plenty of light. But we forgot God. We’ve forgotten God in parliament, in media, in sport, in work, in business, in trade, in activity, in occupation, in pleasure, in fun, in adventure, in life. We are so full, but not full of truth. We have bellies that have a great appetite for sin and lust and pride and world, but no appetite for God’s word. That’s why we forget God, because we had it too good. We’ve got enough of everything else, there is no room for what we don’t have need of. It is human nature to forget God, but the Bible stills says that the nations that forget God will be turned into hell. What a terrible prophetic statement which isn’t just modern phony prophecy, but Biblical prophecy and Biblical truth.

The Bible is a constant warning not to forget God. Israel was warned repeatedly not to forget God. Because God knew they would forget him, and they forgot him awful quick. When you forget God, you disobey God, you rebel against God, you despise God. They did all that. When they forgot God, look what they did out there in the wilderness. It’s actually staggering how quickly we forget God. I can’t quote all the times forget, forgat and forgot are in the Bible, but it would be more than worthwhile doing a little word study for yourself to see all God has to say on the topic. Deuteronomy 6:12 “Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.” Deuteronomy 8:11 “Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:”

The Bible says in Psalm 50:21,22 “These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.” This is God talking. These verses are staggering, and if you read the context, even more staggering. It would be good to read this part of Psalm for yourself and let what God is saying sink into your ears so it doesn’t just go over your head, but takes root, finds good soil, and you don’t quickly and soon forget it. God is talking to the wicked, wicked claiming to be godly but who hate instruction, who cast his word behind them, who consent and partake in wickedness and evil while being all religious and thinking God can’t see, doesn’t know about it, doesn’t mind and doesn’t care. Kinda sounds like professing Christians today.

Newsflash: God is not like you. You may be wicked and deceitful and corrupt and full of sin, but he isn’t. He hasn’t changed. He hasn’t lowered his standards just because you are a degraded rebel. The utterly ridiculous part of people revising and analyzing and correcting his word is you’re presuming and supposing that God is like you. Critical text? Yeah you’re going to peer review God’s word. Because you’re on equal terms with him, you’re capable of helping him aren’t you. You’re like Uzzah, God just needs my hand to steady things to steady that new cart religion of mine. You’re presuming that the Creator is like you, a sinful and rebellious creature. You’re supposing that you know what he’s thinking and trying to say which he cannot because he’s a helpless god like Dagon and a mute god like Baal in your mind. He’s not. All you have is a false god, and you’re thrashing that first commandment of the ten every day with your idolatry. “But I will reprove thee”. God’s word will reprove you. God’s word always reproves. And God will set you in order one day, don’t worry about that. Start considering that so you stop forgetting that.

The Bible says in Hosea 4:6 ” My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.” The Christians of today have forgotten the law of God. And because they forgot his law, they don’t know it. They reject knowledge, and God rejects them. I know professing Christians who would rather not know than know what they not just can know, but should know and are commanded to know. See because they figure if you don’t know, you can make it up how you see fit. At the heart of all this garbage is garden variety sin of man who loves darkness and hates the light and doesn’t want light. They don’t want their works made manifest, they don’t want light shone on their Christ rejecting life.

Jesus said ” And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” In order to be free there are things you could know, should know and will know if you are his. The reason why people forget God and his word is because they don’t believe him. They don’t like his word. They think they know better. They’re choked on pleasures and fun and riches and comfort and leisure and conceit and deceit. If you don’t receive his word, you’ll forget his word. When you use something and when you pin your life on it, you’re not likely to forget it. People forget him and his word because they never “got” him and his word. And look at the far reaching consequence you forgetting God will have. It will carry to your children. Stop making God out to be who he is not, you forget God, God will forget you. And that’s a terrifying thought.

I was thinking the other day about all the landmarks and places that were meant to be reminders for Israel. Moses put a blessing and a curse on two different mountains, there were stones left that meant something, there were altars and places of remembrance and reminder and testimony throughout Israel. You’d see them and you’d be reminded, or you’d ask your dad, what mean these stones? The importance of making sure you do not forget cannot be overstated. God said this in Deuteronomy 11:18 ” Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.” Think about what God is saying. Don’t forget! Always have God and his word before your eyes so you do not forget.

So much of it was about not forgetting. Not forgetting who God is, what God had done, what God had said. History shows Israel was forgetful of their God. If you look at our nation, what is happening is because we have quickly forgotten God and quickly departed out of the way. It’s been done before and everytime it didn’t work out. Judges 3:7  “And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.” After all God had done for Israel, they forgot God. Israel’s history is one of forgetting God, don’t make that your own personal history also.

The Bible says in Psalm 119:16 “I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.” If David could write this, may this be our heart attitude. Instead of hating and rejecting and denying and doubting and disobeying God’s word… how about delighting in it? How about keeping God’s word in your heart, that you might not sin against him? How about receiving the word that is a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path? How about not forgetting it? The only way you won’t forget it is if you believe it and use it. People forget what they don’t need. That’s why we forget God, because we don’t need him. We are full. We are rich. We are comfortable. We know everything ourselves. We have no need of God. But we have never been more bankrupt, more blind, more beggarly, more broken. We need God more than ever.

Psalm 106:13 “They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel:” Psalm 106:21 “They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt;” Deuteronomy 32:18 “Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.” I can’t say it better than the Bible does. This world will not go to hell because it didn’t and couldn’t know God and his word, it will go to hell because they forgot God when they did Romans 1 style. They forgot him because they didn’t believe him. They never received the truth, and they never received God’s only begotten Son. We forget things that we don’t use or have need of. That’s why we forget things, the more relevant and important and vital it is to you, the less likely you are to forget it. We forget God because we have no need of him. And that is a very, very bad place to be, especially in a time where we need him so badly.

Noah lived in an entire world that forgot God, and one day that day of the Lord came on them like a thief. They could’ve seen it coming, they should’ve seen it coming, they could’ve not been destroyed… but they never saw it coming until it was too late and beyond remedy. There is a time where you can believe and receive, but one day that time will run out, and then it will be too late. There are seasons of life where God will work in your life, but seasons end. Believe God while it is today. Don’t forget God in a time where it is so critical to have him. Heaven and hell, blessing and cursing, life and death is at stake for each one of us today. Don’t forget God.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 30 y/o Bible Blogger. I was new to blogging once! God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to bring it to others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ and I am a Lord Jesus Christ follower. He is faithful even though I rarely am to him. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and stake my life on it. My destination is heaven. As they say, I’m just a passin’ through this world… although most of the time it’s more like hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports – particularly cricket… I currently work on an orchard and a side hobby business of mine is growing vegetables etc – they are good for you! I love writing. Always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment. You can read more about me and my blog here – :)
