Where Are You At In Your Life?

Genesis 3:8 – And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

Genesis 3:9 – And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

Genesis 3:10 – And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

Genesis 3:11 – And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

Genesis 3:12 – And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

Hello readers, the question I want to ask today is “Where are you at in life?” My question comes from Genesis 3, where God called unto Adam as he hid himself from God amongst the trees of the garden of Eden.

The situation is that God had placed man in literal paradise. Man had the perfect environment, and man chose to disobey God and sin. It goes to show how far modern psychology is from really helping anyone, because counselling and social programs are not designed around truth or an ability to identify and address the real problem behind man’s behaviour, which is sin.

No, instead they blame the sinner’s environment, rather than the Bible which teaches that we are all sinners who need salvation through Jesus Christ. After the rationalizing and blaming anything else other than the fact people get messed up because of sin, they focus on improving people’s environment to bring the best out of them.

So that means we don’t “judge” them. We definitely don’t call sin for what it is. We instead try to understand them. We try to understand why they do what they do. We focus on making an environment that brings out the good in them… even though in terms of environment, Adam and Eve had it better than any of us will ever have it… and they still chose to do wrong.

If you need counselling, read the Bible for one of the titles of Jesus Christ is “Wonderful, Counsellor…” By the way, Jesus Christ’s counsel is free. So you can save your money and get a real fix for your problems. Redemption is only found in Christ, he can redeem you out of that marketplace of depression and despair.

In Genesis 3, we quickly learn why things are the way they are. People blame God and wring their hands as they say that just can’t understand how God can allow pain and suffering and blah blah. But the reality is, man created his own problem, which is all our problem. Adam made it all our problem, because we all come from him.

Sin is the problem. Sin is why we have any problem in this world. The Bible focuses around the story of the redemption of mankind by God from sin. Sin is why Jesus Christ was born into this world and died on the cross and rose the third day. His very name means “He shall save his people from their sins”. HIS people are saved from their sins. If you aren’t saved from your sins right now, you might just not be one of “his people”.

And the honest reality is that many people just don’t want that. Sure, they don’t mind God getting them out of hell, but they definitely don’t want to be saved from sins which they really harbor in their hearts and love deep down. One verse I thought about recently was “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me”… man, maybe that’s what’s wrong with my prayer life.

But when God called unto Adam in the cool of the day and said “Where art thou?”, it’s a timeless question which he asks each one of us as he seeks us in our sins. He does want to bring us back, he wants you back. I thought of the amazing verse in 1 Peter 1:3 “which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”. I thought, surely that word “again” shouldn’t be there? But it should be. He begot us once, but he begat us again when we got saved through his Son Jesus Christ. He wanted us once, and he wanted us again. That’s quite something isn’t it.

Adam and Eve found out that as a result of disobeying God and sinning, changes came. Sin will change things in a hurry. Adam and Eve knew they were naked. And they hid themselves. Natural reaction of sinful man. But it’s worth noting that they didn’t need to be told they were naked… they just knew. You cannot run away from your conscience, or God for that matter, even though running and hiding from God, from light, from truth is what we all when we are in sin.

Sin produces hiding. When you’re not right, you start doing some hiding. You can’t walk openly, you can’t walk in the light, because your life becomes filled with the fear that Adam and Eve experienced. I know something of this, because I’ve done hiding. We’ve got a whole world hiding from God. But just think about hiding practically. We do it more than you think. It could be people you gotta hide yourself from because you know you sinned with or against them… and because you’ve never cleared that… you avoid them. It could be topics of conversation you need to avoid which will lead to truth you don’t want to confront, it could be anything. As a Christian you could even be hiding from what you know God wants you to do.

When you’ve got sin following you, you start playing hide and seek with God. God does the seeking and you do the hiding. And thank God he does seek us, because he loves us. But many people are living so guilty, just as Adam and Eve were. Guilty people hide. When I’ve done wrong things, I’ve tried hiding it. Remember Moses killing that Egyptian, looking right and left, hiding the body in the sand. And imagine how his heart sank when he realized that people knew. Oh no! And he ran, and he hid from Pharaoh in a far country a long time.

I mentioned counselling earlier, because the true counselling people need is from God’s word. You need his counsel. Not mine… HIS. God is the only one with the way back for you, no humanistic device can restore you. Sin is first of all, disobedience to God. It is against God. David knew this even with his sin with Bathsheba… he sure wronged Uriah… but he acknowledged “against thee, and thee only have I sinned and done this evil in thy sight”. Sin is against God.

Sin must be address and preached on, because in the naming of sin, in the exposing the ugly problem we all have… God the great Physician can now heal it. If you never are willing to face up to the problem, you’ll never get healed of your problem. That’s why they were hiding. They were hiding from truth. Hiding from facing facts. Sin was the problem then, and it still is today. Sin took a world of very good and made it bad enough for God to repent having ever made it such was its evil.

And there are so many people with a litany of sins on their resume and in their conscience which they are trying to not deal with, but escape from. But their sins are following them and with them wherever they go. And people are in a cold sweat their whole lives, fugitives from truth. I was thinking of the phrase in Proverbs which says “sin is a reproach to any people”. It doesn’t matter what year, what continent, what culture, what time, what age… sin is a reproach to ANY people.

But now I need to look at my own life, and I did, and am doing and will yet do. And I need to. And I saw myself in these verses… because when I’ve got sin in my life, when there are areas of disobedience to God… I go into hiding. I live in hiding. I’m running, I’m in the shadows, I’m dwelling in darkness, I’m in a cold sweat, I have no peace, I have no joy. I have a something’s not right deep down which cannot be taken away. My sin troubles me. Sin does take away your sleep just as the Bible says.

There’s a lot to be said for having a clean and clear conscience. Not a self righteous delusion about yourself, not hypocrisy, but experiencing the washing of the blood and the water through honesty before God in confessing sin and making the sin right with him first and then others through Christ. And that ends the running and the hiding from God and from fellow man. I thought of 2 Corinthians 3:18 “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” Be nice to be that huh?

I thought about when the Bible says the righteous are as bold as a lion… because being right with God produces boldness. The godly boldness is gone though because people have been conquered in private, and in public and they’ve gone into hiding. Christians are in hiding through our land, because they’re naked and ashamed. They’ve lost their presence, salt, light, influence, witness, testimony, glory… everything. Because they’ve disobeyed God. But if they would get right, they would come out. It’s a damning indictment on our generation of Christians that we went into hiding while the sodomites came out.

But as already stated, this blog really is just meant to be thought provoking. It is designed for introspection. Not to pick holes in someone else’s life, but instead to really do some honest self evaluation in the light of God’s word. After all, God asked this question not because he didn’t know, but for Adam’s benefit, and for ours as we read today. Where am I at? Truly, what is the state of my heart and my life?

I don’t know where you are at. But what I do know is that Jesus Christ died for your sins. And he is the solution for where you are at right now. Blame is not the solution. Excuses are not the solution. Rationalizations are not the way. Wisdom isn’t being a know it all, it’s being able to receive instruction when you need it. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life. Stop hiding from the truth of God’s word… that’s the start. Because we get into sin, and the first thing we do is distance ourselves from God’s word. We got into hiding from the light. Because in the darkness, our nakedness is not seen for what it is.

You may be at a crossroads in your life. You may be depressed. You may be in temptation to sin. You may be in despair. You may be in failure. And the solution really is not blame. If anything marks the times we live in, it’s the culture of blame. We blame others to excuse and justify ourselves. We point fingers rather than receiving reproofs of instruction, which are the way of life.

It is amazing the separating influence that sin has on us. It separates us from God. Isaiah 59:2 “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” And that’s what happened in Eden. Are you content in the separation between you and God in life? That’s not the life I want. Notice how God came seeking them and not them seeking God. That’s a fundamental principle of salvation. God seeks us, and what we are responsible and accountable for is how we respond. He called out to them, and he’s calling out to you today, Where art thou?

I noticed in these verses that Adam and Eve were afraid. And this world is afraid. They’re afraid of truth. They’re afraid of the light. That’s why they attack the Bible and Bible believing Christians so bad. That’s why they crucified Jesus Christ. If you are not right with God, you will be afraid of the light. It’s amazing how when we are not right with God, truth becomes our enemy. We all as humans do not like to be held to the light. It is because of the darkness that is in us. But I don’t want to hate the light. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes that “truly the light is sweet”. I would like to be at that point where the light is sweet to me. I would like to be at the point where the light is not something I react to and run from, but where my home is. That’s where God’s home is “dwelling in light that no man can approach to”.

But notice what Adam said caused him to hide “I heard thy voice”. It’s the voice of God that people hide themselves from. That’s why they tell you to stop Bible bashing when you share the gospel with them one time while every day you have to listen to their wisdom on everything. Preaching is what we need, preaching of God’s word which the Holy Ghost ministers to the hearts of the hearers. But at a time where the voice of God is so needed, I thought about in Hebrews 12, how those people asked Moses to make it stop. Make him stop Moses. And I really can’t believe it. They wanted God’s voice stopped. The Bible says “which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more”.

Is that where you are at? Are you at the point where you can’t endure what the Bible says? If so, you are in big trouble. Because the word of God is our only hope. If that’s what you’re hiding from… you will never be reconciled to God. Your nakedness will never be clothed. Why do we make God’s word the enemy, when God’s word is our way back? Why hide yourself from the light? Why not come to the light? Why not walk in the light?

Where are you at? Are you in disobedience to God? Are you hiding from God’s word? Are you hiding from truth? Are you hiding from correction? Are you hiding from instruction? Are you really where you want to be? Is sin really that great? The people of this world are living in hiding from God. It’s not they can’t be saved. It’s they don’t want to be saved. See, it really isn’t that hard to get saved and get right. Faith isn’t that far away, for “The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart”.

This world is becoming a better hiding place for sinners by the day. That’s what censorship and cancel culture and hate speech and so on is all about. They’re trying to remove all light and truth from society so this entire world becomes a hiding place from God. The more they can eliminate God’s voice and God’s call, the more comfortable you will be hiding in the darkness. They can’t change who God is, but what they do is create a world attempting to hide from who he is and what he has said. It is delusion, but they choose delusion. All because they just won’t get right about their sin. But no matter what you call it or how much you legalize it or whatever you’ve decided is right and wrong by your immoral standard… sin is still sin. You cannot take away what sin produces either. Sin produces death, sin brings a curse, sin separates. And no matter where you go on this planet, you can see sin and what sin has done.

So where are you at in life? Where are you right now? Is something wrong? Do you know something is wrong? Do you need it fixed? Do you want it fixed? The solution is not hiding from the light, it’s coming to the light, just read John 3. God will call out to you. He’s calling out to sinners today to come unto him. Matthew 11:28 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” God takes the steps to you, all you need to do is come to his voice and respond to his voice. What matters is how you respond to him when he calls out, for we are all in that hiding place of sin. And Jesus Christ’s sheep hear his voice, they come to him, and they follow him. Jesus will save you from your sins. Jesus can take you out of a life of hiding from light and truth, and he can and will forgive you, wash you, save you fully, freely and forever. He is the solution for where you are at.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 32 y/o Bible Blogger. I was new to blogging once! God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to bring it to others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ and I am a Lord Jesus Christ follower. He is faithful even though I rarely am to him. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and stake my life on it. My destination is heaven. As they say, I’m just a passin’ through this world… although most of the time it’s more like hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports – particularly cricket… I currently work on an orchard and a side hobby business of mine is growing vegetables etc – they are good for you! I love writing. Always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment. You can read more about me and my blog here – kjvbibletruth.com/about :)

  1. As I was reading your post, Psalm 139 came to my mind, especially the portion below.
“If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”
    Even the night shall be light about me;
Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,
    But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You.” (v.11-12)

The whole psalm made me think about the fact that people jump from plane to plane, job to job, thrill to thrill, ascend social circles, in the hope to escape God, their pricking conscience and silence any inner conviction of sin… Verse 11 and 12 made me reflect that no matter how respectable we are before others, even the most secluded places in the world such as our brain and our heart are before the Lord. I can’t help but picture that while our brains and our heart are invisible to all, all our thoughts are like a play before His eyes, with real characters and their sins. The seat of our thoughts and our affections may be hidden to others, but laid bare before the Lord, all their convolutions are exposed. Nothing is hidden before Him, hence how serious the injunctions of Matthew 5 are regarding our thought life. Somebody once said, outside of Christ there is no reality, there is meaning- in the sense that we have nowhere else and no one else to run to. Where would we go, anyway ? “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”. Thank you for your posts, I have been reading your blog throughout the week and I have been blessed !

    • Thanks for the comments Stephanie, I am glad my blog has been a blessing to you. Hebrews 4:13 “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” We are an open book to God, hopefully our lives are writing an epistle befitting of the Saviour we serve.
