Job 6:24 – Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.
Job 6:25 – How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?
Hello readers, continuing in Job’s life. Everyone’s an expert. Isn’t that so? Job’s friends certainly where. Job’s friends came to comfort him in his distress… but what followed was a conversation in which they pretty much just accused Job from their great wellspring of wisdom that they thought they had. They spoke like an authority, Eliphaz certified his contributions to Job, basically saying Job this is the truth. However, their answers to Job’s grievances and complaints gave Job no comfort at all. They thought they knew, but they didnt… what Job’s friends said wasn’t right at all of his plight and didn’t help him.
Job’s friends did say some things that in and of themselves are true, but how to apply them they didn’t well know. Wisdom is being able to apply truth… Job’s friends didn’t truly have the wisdom they thought they had (don’t we all!?). Even Satan used God’s word on Jesus Christ to tempt him. Satan used something true but completely misapplied it. For you… it’s not enough to intellectually know Bible truths, you’ve got to be able to know how to apply it to your life. That’s why there is a difference between knowledge, understanding and wisdom. It’s not enough to just know truths, we actually need wisdom. However, the wisdom really lies in the WHO rather than the what. You’ve gotta know the who, because the who gives the wisdom we all need. The BIble says In whom (Jesus Christ) are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge – Colossians 2:3. We don’t know (nearly) as much as we think. And if we don’t know the WHO first, then you’ll be about as empty of substance as Job’s friends were… despite their great speeches.
People might have some whats… but they don’t have the who. They speak without having that true relationship and fellowship with Christ. They don’t have the wisdom from above. It is funny that noone has to teach us to think we know it all… we are know it alls by nature. It seems we all think our opinion is the most important and most valid. Everyone has their two cents after all, and everyone definitely has their opinion! Remember the scene of Jesus hanging on the cross in Matthew 27:39-44… some said this and some said that. Remember when Jesus asked Peter… who do men say that I am? And Peter said some say you are this guy and some say you are that guy. Everyone’s got their own ideas, their own philosophies, their own thoughts, their own wisdom… but how empty is it! When vain people talk great swelling words… yet they have no substance, nothing real to give someone else. And the Bible still says let God be true and every man a liar – Romans 3:4. When we are full of pride and full of ourselves, we don’t help… rather we destroy, we don’t bring light… but darkness. God said later on in this book… Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? No wonder the old saying… we all sound smarter when we keep our mouths shut.
As Job did, how easy it is in life to get caught up in vain, pointless, futile debating and disputing that brings no peace, no comfort, no rest. And how even easier it is to miss the whole point completely. We can have the greatest of conversations and dialogue as these guys did… yet get nowhere. How easy it is to strain at a gnat and swallow a camel! People miss the who. The who is what is required to get some things straight in each of our lives. It was when GOD spoke that things got straightened out. Notice how God didn’t speak until they had stopped. You know, God should be able to use you to tell others truth, but can he use you? Or are you so full of yourself he cannot and does not? Job’s friends were so wise, they thought they Job’s life all figured out. They thought they had God figured out. They certainly had their opinion, and they cast it at Job as fact. But Job said… what doth your arguing reprove? They didn’t add anything meaningful to the conversation. Job’s like, this isn’t why this is happening… and it wasn’t. We in fact don’t know many “whys”, but we know that God lets things happen in life for our betterment, for our spiritual growth, so that he is glorified through the good and the bad… God can use both good and evil. But like Job’s friends, how often we can be high and lofty and so full of ourselves that we cannot minister truth and we be of no help and no comfort to someone else. Job’s friends weren’t even on the same wavelength.
But Job also said… How forcible are right words! Where can we find some right words? God’s word. We need to speak right words. Speak the truth in love. Don’t speak your opinion, speak what God’s word says. Speak from knowing the WHO, and what the WHO has said. It seems crazy, but they somehow thought they were better than Job because they had their “ducks in a row”… they had their lives in order while Job’s was trainwreck. They didn’t realize they could easily have been in the same boat and just as deserving. Job’s friends were afraid by what they saw in Job’s life, yet condemned him. But how easily it could be us in Job’s position! We don’t control any as much as we think of our lives. And we often think where we are at in life is a function of how good we are. But it’s not the case. We need God’s word to set us straight… God’s word, that is those forcible right words. How forcible are they? They are so true noone can withstand God’s word. Noone can prove it wrong, noone can challenge God’s authority, though they may and do try. That’s why people hate God’s word, because it’s words are so forcible on them.
You know, often it’s us that are in the way. Job’s friends could’ve been like… Job we don’t really know why, but here’s the truth, God is in control, God knows what he’s doing, just trust him through it. Job… God is patient, merciful, longsuffering… but instead they tried to use God as a battering ram to put Job down. They are like many people, who because their lives were all going perfectly and Job’s was a mess, that gave them some authority to speak down to him. But maybe you have life made… yet you are not the one growing spiritually. Job was, they weren’t. When Stephen spoke to the council that was going to kill him, the Bible says they could not withstand the spirit by which he spake. It’s evident when the Holy Spirit is talking through someone, as contrasted to someone who is just puffing themselves out. Wisdom and knowledge comes from WHO, not what. Wisdom after all belongs to God… The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens – Proverbs 3:19. When you are speaking from knowing Jesus Christ… it carries a lot more weight then speaking from dry intellect and worldly wisdom and proud education. God doesn’t need intellectuals and philosophers and wise men… he he resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
And sometimes the answer is just trust God, because he knows more. After all that’s what this life is about. That’s what God said to Job. Job… trust me. The just shall live by faith… and without faith it is impossible to please God. They were having this big old dialogue, but it was getting nowhere, and it wasn’t helping anyone. Vain arguing which gives no rest, gives no peace, gives no comfort. Just the sounding brass and tinkling cymbals that 1 Corinthians 13 speaks of. Without charity, we are nothing. Where was the charity in the speeches of his friends? Job said ye dig a pit for your friend. When you’re the expert, you’re no help. We are all sinners, we are all in the same boat, we all need Jesus Christ, and we all have the same word of God available to us.
Sometimes you’re smarter not saying anything than speaking a lot about things you really don’t know about. That’s Job’s friends. They had some understanding of God no doubt, they had some truths… but they didn’t have THE TRUTH, the WHO… the widom that comes from relationship and fellowship with Jesus Christ. That’s why people are dry… they lack the Spirit of God. They lack that “alive” part of the whole deal. Wisdom comes from Jesus… it’s a person. Without Christ you won’t have real wisdom. You may have natural understanding and knowledge, but you don’t have the truth, the light, the life. Job’s friends had knowledge… but they didn’t have real life experience to turn it from some understanding on paper type deal to real life. Their arguing reproved nothing… we are not called to argue, we are called to stand for and upon the right words of the Holy Bible, on the words of Christ. Everyone is an expert in this day and age, but actually it is Jesus Christ who has all wisdom and knowledge, and it is Him who we need, and through him we can actually get some wisdom and have some truth and comfort today for ourselves and others.
Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 30 y/o Bible Blogger. I was new to blogging once! God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to bring it to others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ and I am a Lord Jesus Christ follower. He is faithful even though I rarely am to him. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and stake my life on it. My destination is heaven. As they say, I’m just a passin’ through this world… although most of the time it’s more like hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports – particularly cricket… I currently work on an orchard and a side hobby business of mine is growing vegetables etc – they are good for you! I love writing. Always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment. You can read more about me and my blog here – kjvbibletruth.com/about :)
