1 John 3:10 – In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
1 Samuel 2:12 – Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD.
Acts 17:28 – For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
Hello readers, another blog today! It’s a bit of a difficult blog this one I hope to be as clear as possible to communicate what God’s word teaches. I thank you for reading, and ask God to show and confirm the truth of his word to you… and so let’s get in to it. Who are the children of God? Today a lot of people think and teach that we all are children of God… but is it true? It sounds nice and fuzzy to think that we are all God’s children. However, today we will see that the Bible is going to make a very clear distinction in who are his children and who are not. Because not all of us are children of God. In fact, many people are instead children of the devil. That’s the facts, Satan himself has many children… and you reader, might just be a child of the devil today… or is that too confronting?
In the beginning God created man, and he created Adam in his image. The Bible calls Adam the son of God. Note, that he was not capital “s”, Adam was not Jesus Christ, nor was he God, as Jesus was and is. Man was created in God’s image, and thus has a special place in creation. But then something happened. And this has changed the whole ball game, and why we are addressing the children of God issue in this blog. Because man was made in the image of God, God breathed into Adam the breath of life and man became a living soul… but then Adam sinned. We have no idea how great the fall actually was, we tend to think that God said thou shalt surely die, and don’t think it actually happened. But the instant Adam disobeyed God, man died.
Life is inextricably tied to God. Seeing as the Bible says of Jesus “in him was life”, when we are separated from God by our sins… seeing as he is holy, just, good, pure… we don’t have life. And this ties in to our topic today. Mankind’s state, his nature, was altered by sin. It’s why there are children of the devil, and many people today are children of the devil. Sure, the devil is not God and cannot give life, but for many people, they are the devil’s children, not God’s children. God begot us once, but unless he begets you again… you are not his child. Because when Adam sinned, he died, and was plunged into the kingdom of the devil. Satan became the ruler of this world, and people of the world are his children. 1 Peter 1:3 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. You wouldn’t need to be begotten again if you were already his child.
It is necessary to remember that Satan wants to be like God, Satan wants to be God, and the introduction of himself to Adam through getting Adam and Eve to disobey God caused the creation of his own seed line. This might sound far fetched, but look in Genesis… there is the seed of the woman… and there is the seed of the serpent. Genesis 3:15… there are two seed lines, there are two lines of children… you are either a child of God, or a child of the devil. The childhood refers to spiritual fathership, and Satan is the father of many people today… so it would do well to look to yourself, and see who you resemble more closely, because there are many ways you can tell whose child you are.
Adam (and Eve) sinned in the garden of Eden. And with that sin came a spectacular (in a bad way) capitulation of humankind. Adam and Eve had children, and that’s where we come from, down the generations of mankind, the product of humans having kids having kids having kids and so on. So many iterations of humans, yet all under sin. Nothing could break what happened at the start, everyone was waiting for the arrival of someone, a Messiah, who could fix humanity… many of the people in the Old Testament bore names and represented hope… but they were not the Messiah. From Noah to John the Baptist… yet they were not the one… until a man came, Jesus Christ, who could change things up, and break up Satan’s vicelike grip that held sway seemingly with no end.
Sin caused a dramatic change in that image of God we started with, spiritually we were plunged into death the moment Adam and Eve took of the fruit… Satan’s kingdom is a kingdom of death, and mankind has abode in death ever since… here’s a clue… has anyone ever not died? It’s a universal law, as the Bible says. With disobedience to God, who is good, so it broke the relationship to God that we had.So many people say, how can a good God send someone to hell? But think about it… how can a perfect good God NOT send a bad person to hell? God is perfect, holy, pure, just, righteous, and he deals with sin… the Bible says he will by no means clear the guilty. There is a hell, because God is so good. And so, back in the garden of Eden, because of sin, we became no longer children of God. Adam was the son of God, but we read in John that “as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name”. If we were God’s sons, we wouldn’t need to be born again, we wouldn’t need to become the sons of God if we already were. Because we sinned, we became lost, separated from God, in fact dead in sin. Salvation is being adopted… you cannot cry Abba Father unless you have been saved, forgiven, washed, cleansed, and made alive in Christ Jesus. Why would you need to be born again if you were already God’s child? We wouldn’t need to become his child if we were already one of his children. So we see not all people are children of God, in fact many are instead… not.
You see, when you were born, you were born in sin and in death. You may have benefited from God’s grace, but you are not his child until you get saved. That’s what salvation is, a new creature, a new creation… a child of God birthed by the Holy Spirit of God. We don’t do this, in fact we don’t even understand this… at salvation all we do is see we are sinners, lost, in death and call on Jesus Christ to forgive us, believing him, on his name and claiming what he has done for us. It’s later on that we start to realize, hey, something’s new inside me, and we begin to discover the great things God has done for us. Consider this verse… James 1:18 – Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Have you been begotten by God? And note how we are begotten by God… it’s BY the word of truth. That’s why we must both preach and hear the truth, and receive it, because the truth of God’s word, the gospel of Jesus Christ alone has power to save us. Give people Bible, nothing else… anything else is sad imitation, with no power to save. The word of God is what has the power to save, it is the seed which can bring forth new life. And it can beget you, and when are you begotten by God, what was lost in Eden can be restored… because of what Jesus did and who Jesus is. The redemption of man… and that relationship and all the associated privileges and blessings which was lost at the start we can have again!
Back in Genesis, with the introduction of sin, and the marring of the image, there became then two lines of children. Adam had a child called Cain, whom the Bible says was of that wicked one. 1 John 3:10 makes it clear that there are children of God and children of the devil… there is a difference between the two. You and I were given life by God, but until you get saved you are not a son of God, you are not a child of God. In fact, you are very far from it. You are a sinner, born under the curse, born in sin, separated from God, alienated from him. Death, sickness, pain, suffering are all proofs of your mortality. God did not create us to die, yet we die. We are born not into the very good creation that was at the start, but a creation throughly tainted by the scourge of sin and rebellion, into a world of darkness. It is much like the state of play at the start of Exodus. Pharaoh was the ruler of Egypt, but God was over all. Satan is the prince of this world, but he answers to God, because at the end of the day, Satan, although powerful, is a created being, and under God. God uses Satan, but wants to bring a people for himself out of the kingdom of this world, and redeem kindred from Satan’s clutches, much like God using Moses to deliver Israel from bondage in Egypt. You don’t have to be a child of the devil, that’s the new today. God is a much better Father.
At the start of the blog, there is a quote that we are the offspring of God. And we are God’s offspring in the sense of God gave you life, the original image that we were created in was in God’s image, but we lost our status as his sons, his children at the start, when we sinned and died. Adam went from relationship and fellowship with God to hiding himself from God, naked in Eden. Satan was after humanity to turn them to worship him, because he seeks to be like God, and wants the praise and glory for himself. But Satan cannot give life, his kingdom is characterized by death and destruction and darkness. He is NOT God. Its why his offers and his promises are lies, it’s why this world is built on vanity and deceit. He robbed humanity through his subtlety, and corrupted mankind. You are a fallen creature. Yes, you owe your life, your breath, your existence to God… Satan gave you none of this. But this doesn’t make you a son of God… it doesn’t mean you have a relationship with God, or fellowship with God, or even know God. So to approach people and say we are all children of God is wrong. Not everyone are sons of God, not all of us are children of God. Anyone can be a child of God yes, but you can only become his child, with God as your Father, by believing in his Son. You cannot know God but through the Lord Jesus Christ.
There are people who claim, and sincerely believe they are children of God but not. The Bible talks of this in Hebrews… where it is clear that we can be bastards, which means that we are claiming to be children of God, but are not. A spiritual bastard is someone claiming to be a Christian, but whose Father is not God, but instead… the devil. There were many people through the Bible who were children of the devil. Even many who were in high up, exalted positions, such as Hophni and Phineas who the Bible says were children of Belial (the devil). So were the wicked people of the tribe of Benjamin who wanted to rape the Levite, and ended up raping and killing his concubine. There are many people in the Bible whom we see as examples, whose Father was not God, but instead their father was actually the devil. Spiritually the devil is your father. You see, physically you were created, but part of what makes you you, who you are, is your spirit and soul… and unless God is your spiritual father, he is not your father at all, nor you he his child.
You only became a son of God one way, that is the only way to become a child of God. Galatians 3:26 – For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. That’s pretty simple is it. It’s why Jesus said, you must be born again. Without having been born again of the Spirit of God, he is not your Father. Jesus said to the unbelieving Jewish crowd, ye are of your father the devil. So that’s quite confronting isn’t it. It makes us all feel nice and fuzzy thinking we are all God’s children and it’ll be all ok, and we’re so special. But actually we are not, you are not. If you haven’t been saved, you are not a son of God, you are not his child. The Bible says in John 1:12 – But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. If you believe in Jesus Christ you will become his child… in other words, the power to become his child lies in believing in Jesus Christ. If you want to live as a child of God, consider this verse… Romans 8:14 – For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. This is teaching works, it is merely showing that, you need the Spirit of God to be the son of God… as evidenced additionally by this verse… Romans 8:9 – But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. If you do not have the Spirit of Christ… you are NONE OF HIS.
Who you are spiritually is who you truly are, and your spiritual father is your Father. Many people prefer Satan as their father, he makes them a good offer, and they are blinded to the truth. They don’t even want the truth. Many people preferred life under Pharaoh, even the Israelites who were brought out of Egypt wanted to go back. How do we know whose child we are? 1 John 3:10 – In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. Wow, that is confronting. People that do not do righteousness nor love their brothers and sisters in Christ are not children of God. That sets an impossibly high standard right out the gate! The Bible says in Romans 9:8 that the children of the flesh are not the children of God. And that helps us understand 1 John 3:10 a bit more. It is impossible to do righteousness and love brothers and sisters in the Lord in the flesh. We can only do it if we have the Spirit of God.
When we are born again there is a little creature born in us who does righteousness and who does love fellow believers. That is undeniable. However, we also have our flesh, and sadly, our flesh rules us more often than the Spirit of God who lives in us. We are dual natured beings, and we are only delivered from our flesh fully at death. That’s why this life is a struggle, because although saved, we still struggle with sin, unbelief, doing wrong, even not liking fellow children of God. But greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. Someone who is truly saved, will bring forth fruit… how can you not if God’s Holy Spirit lives in you? It’s confronting because it makes us all look out ourselves. Does our life really show that we are children of God? Do you have the witness of God both through the Bible and to your heart that you are his child? Romans 8:16 – The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God … it’s time for us to make sure we are actually a child of God. There are many ways you can know, read the Bible and find out. The children of the devil behave like their father, the devil. Is your life characterized by lust, pride, disobedience and rebellion to God? Are you full of lies and darkness? Maybe it’s just because you are a child of the devil. Compare that to the kingdom of God… which according to Romans 14:17 is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. Whose child are you really? You may be the offspring of God, yet a child of the devil. The spirit level is who you really are, maybe you are just of the serpent’s seed right from way back in Genesis, you take on from people like Cain… you’re not like an Abel, whom Cain slew. It’s time to get serious with God… whose child are you?
Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 30 y/o Bible Blogger. I was new to blogging once! God's word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to bring it to others! We are blessed to be a blessing!
