Job 14:7 – For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

Job 14:8 – Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

Job 14:9 – Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

Hello readers, thank you for taking the time to read this, and hopefully this is a blessing and relevant to your life. I am in the book of Job, Job was going through the darkest hour of his life. This great man of God was being tried and tested, and he would come forth as a gold. Job was cut down, but he would come back again… just he couldn’t see it in the darkness he was in.

Job said something in the fourteenth chapter which has stayed with me. In it, he describes a tree being cut down and apparently done for and gone. But the part that is in the ground, the root, still has life in it, and there is hope that it will come back, though it be cut down.

I have seen this happen many times at my job, we cut trees down right at the base, but they sure can come back stronger than ever. We had a tree at my home which was just a little stump, and it looked dry and dead, but it started getting a bit of water when I watered my vegetables, and suddenly there were some buds on it and it sprouted into life from death and became a magnificent tree once again.

I have called my blog “hope of a tree is the hope for thee”. Think about this tree cut down, which looks dead and finished on the surface, there’s nothing to it, yet it carries great hope. You have great hope if your life has root in the right place, in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. And God may have cut you down a few times in your life, and he may yet cut you down… but no matter what happens, no matter how hard the cut, in all that there is hope, real hope. If your life has root in true repentance, forgiveness and salvation, in the word of God, in the Lord Jesus Christ… you have the hope of life, and you have the hope and promise of coming back.

The ultimate hope of a tree is based on Calvary, for our Lord died on a tree, and all our hope for life is based on Jesus’ once for all time sacrifice of himself on that tree. Jesus Christ was cut down, he died on the cross, he bore the wrath of God, and it appeared as though evil had won, it appeared as though Satan had won, it appeared as though this evil world had won… and yet three days later he budded and took life from the dead.

Job was feeling hopeless in being cut down. His life had been cut down, his plans, his understanding, his business, his family… he’d experienced a harsh cut. And he felt hopeless, but the hope of the tree was the hope for me.

And when talking about hope, the God’s promises in the Bible aren’t blind hope, but real hope. We don’t just hope in something for hope’s sake, we hope in something based on the sureness of what God has said. If you put down your roots deep in God’s word, it doesn’t matter how much of your life is buzzed up and buzzed off, maybe your job taken… maybe your life taken… there is hope. You will bud again. We believe in the God of the living.

Maybe your life has been cut down in the last two years, maybe it seems like there is nothing left. Yet if you have your root in Jesus Christ, you have a well founded and well grounded hope of regeneration. Remember Joseph? He experienced getting cut down a  few times didn’t he, and just when it looked like he was making a comeback in Potiphar’s house, he got cut down again. But he kept coming back, just like a tree with life in its roots and the scent of water keeps coming back. It wants to grow and it cannot be denied. And a life based in Christ cannot be denied, and won’t be for all time.

There’s nothing like a bit of water to make those roots move again. That’s why you water your plants, because they need water to live. You get in the word of God, and the Holy Spirit starts moving in your life, and those roots will start getting happy. Stop denying yourself the water, and surely as a Christian, you know the scent of the life giving truth of God’s word. You have an enemy, Satan, who wants to keep you out of the Bible, out of God’s word, because he doesn’t want you to bud and sprout and shoot again in your life. Satan couldn’t keep Jesus dead, and neither can he you if your root is in he who rose alive forevermore.

The Bible says in Colossians 2:7 ” Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” If you are rooted in Christ, you have not just a root, but you have THE Root. Did you know one of the names of Christ in Revelation 5:5 is the “Root of David”. Why do you think David prospered and kept coming back, even after being cut down? Because Christ was his root. And he physically died with that hope of living with Christ.

Do you have your root in Christ? If your root is not Christ, you have no root. Because he is the Root. If you have no root, you are in trouble, a tree with no root will be easily blown over, and it will die. And your life isn’t based on what’s above ground, but what is below the ground. What is below the surface in your life? For many people, you may not know what is below the surface, what the quality of the root system is. And you may manage to look pretty good above ground, but you may have rot in your roots, you may not have the root that lasts forever.

The Bible says in Proverbs 2:22 ” But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.” God will root the transgressors out of the earth. But if you are saved, though you may be cut down, your root will remain. And that is a blessed truth.  Think about it. No matter what happens, the worst that can happen is that you are cut off at the base. But your root cannot be touched, because Christ cannot be touched, and you cannot be moved. Think about it, that stump does not move though it be cut down.

The hope of a tree is the hope for thee. There is hope for you. You may experience cutting down, and it may be quite a painful process, and your life may feel about as bare and blank as that dead stump in the ground… but know that if your root is Christ, you have the promise of regeneration. Yeah it might look hopeless, blank, bare, dead at the moment, but the buds will come again and the Bible says the tender branch of your life will not cease. You can make a comeback, and if you are saved, you will, because of the Root. Maybe you need just a scent of water, maybe you just need to once again think about the glorious salvation of God, the glorious truths of the Bible, and the glorious God you serve, who even if you are completely cut down, dried up and burnt out, is still God, and is still worthy of our adoration and praise and our hope.
