2 Peter 3:3 – Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
2 Peter 3:4 – And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
The Bible was written so that we might know things. God wants us to know things, and God says that he has not left himself without witness. Jesus has lighted every man that has come into the world. In Hebrews 1, the Bible says that God has spoken, and he has spoken to us in many ways, and in the last days which we are in, he has spoken to us by his very Son. We have a God that has spoken to us. He has not forsaken his creation. He is not a God detached from this world. God has spoken. His word is spirit, his word goes beyond ink on paper, and his word has come to everyone that has ever lived. The Bible says that the grace of God that bringeth salvation has appeared unto all men. The heavens declare the glory of God, the earth showeth forth his handiwork. The law of God is written in our hearts. And now we must know something, Peter said this in the final chapter of his final epistle.
It can seem like we have a God that never does anything. It can seem like he is detached, it can seem like evil is prevailing, the wicked triumphing, and God is doing nothing about it. It can seem like God has abandoned his creation, and that he never gets involved at all. Things seem to just continue as they have been year after year. This mindset is nothing new. This is what people were like back in the days of Noah. And God through Peter takes us back to the days of Noah to show us something we must know. We must know that God does have the authority and ability to judge his creation, and that he has done and is about to judge his creation again. The story of Noah’s flood is true, despite all those who deny and mock and cast doubt on the story the flood. People deny the flood not based on scientific evidence, but because they cannot handle the truth that we have a God that has the power to execute judgement on his creation. You and I are powerless to stop him. But the Bible says that the longsuffering of God is salvation, God gave the people a long time before he sent the flood. We can think that God is not doing anything, but what we are really doing is taking his longsuffering for granted. With the same breath which God graciously allows us, we can curse and mock and deny him! As the Bible says in Romans 1, do you despise the longsuffering of God which leadeth unto repentance?
There came a day when it was too late. God shut Noah and his family in the ark. And just like when the hand wrote on the wall dooming Belshazzar, and when the angels went to Sodom to fetch Lot, judgement had already been passed. It was too late. Judgement was coming, and then it came. In 2 Peter 2, the Bible says that their judgement lingered not, and their damnation slumbered not. And this is the same with the world today. There is a day soon coming, the day of the Lord, when it will be too late. This world lies in wickedness. This world is under condemnation. This world is unrepentant. This world is doomed. This is the truth of God’s word. He has spoken, and he has warned. You will not escape, and nor would I if I was not by faith in the ark of the Lord Jesus Christ. When the floods of judgement come, I am safe. Because I am sealed in the ark. The Bible says that the same waters that destroyed them all, were the same waters that saved Noah. Do not think that God was destroying innocents. They were wicked, they were corrupted, they were evil, the world was full of violence. I deserve God’s holy wrath and condemnation against my sin, but Jesus took it for me in my place. My faith is in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is him, and him alone who is worthy, who has salvation, who is righteous, who is powerful, who is able, who is God.
What have you done with the word that has come to you? Hebrews 12:25 – See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven. God has spoken to you as he has to everyone, it’s not that he hasn’t spoken to you, it’s just most people do not like what he is saying. You may want God to be quiet. Stop speaking God! I don’t like what God is saying! This is where false Bibles, false prophets, false teachers, false beliefs are so easily accepted and believed, they give the masses words that they want to hear, words that stroke their pride, that excuse their lusts, that sooth their itching ears, but words that ultimately only grease the slide to eternal doom. And this is nothing knew. The children of Israel heard the voice and saw the terror of the Lord at the base of Mount Sinai when the law was given. Hebrews says that they intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more, and that they could not endure that which was commanded. We will either come to the light of God’s word, or we will scuttle from it. His word is sharper than a two edged sword, his word cuts straight to the heart, to the soul, to the spirit.
Peter reminds us that God is longsuffering, but that we can be sure that judgement is coming. Judgement came in the days of the Noah, it seemingly took forever, Noah looked like an idiot for a long time. 2 Peter 3:5 – 7 – For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 2 Peter 3:9,10 – The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. I can only quote Bible, because I cannot say it better than God says it.
So what are you going to do? Things may be going well for you. Life may be the same year after year for you. You may believe in a history where things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. You may deny the existence of God, or believe that he is detached from his creation. Luke 17:27 – They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. There you go, you have been warned. Despite whatever you may choose to believe, truth is truth, no matter how deep you stick your head in the sand. The Bible says that the day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night. Now is the time to repent. You have an opportunity today. You have no guarantees for anything beyond right now. Are you going to turn away from him that speaketh? You will not escape. The flood destroyed them all. But this does not need to be your story, you can be saved and know it. And it is very simple. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. Lord, be merciful to me a sinner. Jesus came so that you do not need to go to hell, but if you refuse him, there is nothing left for you. John 14:6 – Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. You can be saved today.
Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 30 y/o Bible Blogger. I was new to blogging once! God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to bring it to others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ and I am a Lord Jesus Christ follower. He is faithful even though I rarely am to him. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and stake my life on it. My destination is heaven. As they say, I’m just a passin’ through this world… although most of the time it’s more like hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports – particularly cricket… I currently work on an orchard and a side hobby business of mine is growing vegetables etc – they are good for you! I love writing. Always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment. You can read more about me and my blog here – kjvbibletruth.com/about :)
