The Old Sword Of The Faith Still Works! Just Take It!

1 Samuel 21:8 “And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.”

1 Samuel 21:9 “And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.”

In 1 Samuel 21, “David” is on the run from king “Saul”, forced to flee for his life because Saul’s irrational and illogical envy towards him has now turned into full scale attempts to murder him.

As David is on the run, he encounters a priest called “Ahimelech” who presides at the city of Nob. And he gives David and his small band of men something to eat… because they’re starving!

… And while David is there… and seeing he doesn’t have a weapon… he asks the priest… do you have a something I can use to fight with?

Well… as it turns out, the priest just so happens to have David’s old sword somewhere “out the back”! It’s the very same sword that David used to kill Goliath “back in the day”… and instead of it being a dust gathering museum piece… now is the time to bring it out of retirement!

… This story relates to the life of a Christian today in so many amazing ways.

As Christians, we are in a spiritual conflict, soldiers in the war of the ages… and we are meant to “fight the good fight of faith” and “war a good warfare” …but how can you fight if you don’t have a weapon to fight with?

You wouldn’t want to go to war without a gun, David needed a sword… and as Christians, God has given us a sword for our spiritual battles.

… And that sword is the word of God… a VITAL part of the Christian armoury that we all are required to possess and use if Satan and this world is not going to make mincemeat out of our lives.

Sadly though… many have surrendered the “2nd amendment” rights that God has given them spiritually speaking… many have laid down arms, signing a peace treaty with Satan on his terms… or else they traded in “upgraded” the old sword for a flashier model… but vastly inferior weapon.

Interesting to note… that at this time in history, very few people in Israel actually had a sword, because the Philistines had taken their swords off them, they’d disarmed Israel… just like many Christians have been disarmed today.

But the importance of being armed is a theme throughout the whole Bible, tracing right back to Genesis 14 where war breaks out and hapless Lot is taken captive, and so then his uncle Abram arms his servants to go and rescue him.

… Lot didn’t have arms, couldn’t defend himself and was taken captive, whereas Abram did, could and wasn’t. Pretty simple truth here hey!

And so as Christians, we are told to “take… the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” … which means we don’t have to be scared and “on the run” (like David was here) for our whole Christian life… instead we can face up and stand our ground on the truth of God’s word.

And this story teaches so much more – it teaches that the weapon for today’s warfare is none other than the weapon that worked in the past!

… Like with David here repossessing the trusty old sword that killed Goliath, it’s the old Bible that worked in the past, that produced true salvation and built families and nations, that is the only hope in winning the battles we face today.

Never has there been more a time when Christians are required to rediscover the old sword of the faith… the King James Bible… it still is the giant slaying weapon of choice for the child of God.

It’s still just as sharp as ever! And make no mistake, for today’s very real battles we all face, you’re going to need the real thing, not a toy pea shooter.

The priest said to David that that sword was the only weapon he had to give him “There is no other save that here” … and the truth is, you don’t need a trillion different “versions” of God’s word and endless Hebrew and Greek waffle. You only need the one book that always worked.

And so David said to the priest “There is none like that; give it me” … there truly is no book like the King James Bible. It stands alone. And despite the “spectrum” out there, there are actually only two Bibles to choose between… the King James and “the rest”… so best just go the “OG”!

The King James Bible is plenty good for the fight of faith, it hasn’t lost it’s edge… and it still works as well as ever!!! … and so all that’s left to be done is as the priest said to David “if thou wilt take that, take it”!

… take it!

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
