Jacob’s Well… Still A Great Place To Meet Christ!

John 4:6 “Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.”

Imagine for a second that you are severely dehydrated, your mouth is dry, it’s hot, you’ve had no water all day… you’re SO thirsty! but you see a well in the distance! … hope!

You somehow drag yourself to that well, dreaming of drawing cool, refreshing, life giving water from it… but when you lower the bucket down, and pull it up, there’s nothing in it!

How disappointing! How devastating! You lower your bucket again… draw it up… still empty! You desperately peer over the edge and look down… oh, there’s no water there!

No matter how many times you may lower the bucket, there’s no water coming out of that well to save your dying soul. This well is a mirage of false hope. None of us can survive without water.

… There are many precious souls in this world today who are desperately thirsty. They are thirsting for something more, “water of life”, something that truly satisfies their soul.

People tap into “wells” of this world that they think will satisfy, fulfill and complete them. It could be many things, like sports, career, pleasure, adventure, fame… but they thirst again.

It could be religion, and even be going to a church, only to find that sadly many churches also these days are “wells without water” that God warns us would be the case in 2 Peter 2:17.

… There is nothing in and of this world that can satisfy that thirst within you that was designed to be and only can be satisfied in God in truth in Christ.

You can “go back to the well” of this world and dead religion as much as you want, nothing can substitute for true salvation. Sin at best “satiates” temporarily… not satisfies.

Salvation is the well we all need to draw from! Isaiah 12:3 “Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.” Hopefully you have, and if not, you can!

Salvation of souls is THE most important thing in this world and life.

In John 4, we read about Christ meeting a woman at a well. She’d “lowered the bucket” again and again… she’d had five husbands and on the sixth guy… but this was her day she drew water of life for the first time and forever in Christ Jesus.

But the key detail I noticed here was that Jesus didn’t meet her at just any old well, he met her at “Jacob’s well”. Very specific meeting place!

Jacob has become one of my favourite characters in the Bible, he found Jesus Christ! And he left a life, legacy and heritage through which others could find Christ for themselves as he did.

He didn’t leave an “empty well”, the well still worked. And we need to get back to the wells that worked for Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

That begins with getting back into the book that is flowing rivers of living water. Return to that well, DIG and drill down into the Bible, get a bit below the surface, you’ll meet Christ there!

Remember, Jesus was living in a contemporary modern “hip” time when he met the woman at the well… but it was at an old well, a tried, tested and true well where a woman somewhere sometime, thirsting after truth, finally found salvation.

Then she had, and then you’ll have something for someone else too! Because even if we are living in a spiritual desert and dryland these days… take courage from king Uzziah… he dug wells in the desert in 2 Chronicles 26:10!

In and of ourselves we are nothing, but Christ is everything and worth it. When you have the water of life, it cannot but overflow to others. God used Jacob’s life to still change other lives all those years later.

There’s so much to learn from wells of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in God’s word! Abraham left his son Isaac some wells, but the Philistines filled them in with “earth” to stop him getting the water… he had to dig them back out! “And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father”

Maybe if you’re saved, a bit too much of this “earth” got in your well and the water’s stopped a long time. Time to fix that don’t you think!

There’s blessings at the well spring of God! It was at a well that Abraham’s servant found Isaac’s wife for him! See God provide! But there’s also battles over wells too! … and isn’t that the truth, Isaac’s biggest battle he had in life was over people trying to keep him away from his wells.

Don’t let anyone keep you away from the well that always did work and still does work… it’s still salvation that’s required through repentance of sin and faith in Christ, it’s still the old book… Christ will still meet you at that well!

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
