For Adam There Was Not An Help Meet For Him

Genesis 2:20 “And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.”

With this post, I want to encourage and strengthen any and all Christian singles (who have a desire for a spouse – and most do) that God has created the right person just for you.

Singles need encouragement! Because singleness might just be the toughest arena that many Christians will face the fiery trial of their faith in.

It can seem like the more a Christian follows Christ, the more their field for potential mates is narrowed… and it can leave many without hope. But take hope from God’s word!

The verse above is taken from the creation account in the book of Genesis. After God created Adam, and placed him in the garden of Eden, and as Adam named all the animals… Adam felt all alone “there was not found an help meet for him”.

There was noone for him. Maybe you feel that way?

But God already knew he was alone, God had already seen his need, and he’s seen yours too… despite the fact that as time passes by you may think he’s forgotten you.

At the end of last year, I was very greatly discouraged as I read the verse above, and stopped there and closed my Bible, because I didn’t feel like what was next applied to me, there’s no verse 21 for me.

Maybe you feel the same way also. But thankfully, even if you close the book in despair… the next verse is still there!

If you read on, and haven’t quit at verse 20, you’ll find that in the next verse God does make the woman just right and perfect for Adam, her for him and he for her.

And Adam isn’t upset with who God has provided for him, and neither will you be with who God has made for you to be brought to you in his timing.

… Sure, maybe you wouldn’t have chosen and haven’t liked the path of singleness you’ve been on to date!

… But God lets us go through certain things in our lives so that we can identify more with others, and be more merciful, understanding and compassionate to those in the same position.

Because often what legitimizes us in the eyes of others is the fact we’ve shared in their struggles.

That’s why Christians pretending they don’t ever sin and living in self righteousness will never reach anyone for Christ.

And there’s no greater example of this than our Saviour, because what qualifies him to humanity is that although he was fully God… he was also fully man.

Jesus didn’t play the “God” card, he knows what you are going through. He never got married and enjoyed marital bliss in his life here.

If you subtract Jesus from the picture, if you close the book without Christ… life always gets depressing and hopeless. But if you add him to your singleness, suddenly the picture changes, suddenly there is a verse 21.

Because if you’ve ever read Ephesians 5, you’ll know that what comes next here in Genesis 2 is a picture of Christ and the church as typified in the marriage of Adam and Eve… and so Jesus has had to wait for his marriage too!

In the meantime, in the process of the waiting, in all likelihood there will be mistakes, intentional or not, and I pray God’s mercy and truth remains with you in them and through them.

But in all this, remember, that in the process of finding your spouse as a Christian, God will make sure you find him much deeper also.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side. 1. Wow Joseph. Thank the Lord for giving Joseph this insight and sharing it! Yesterday, I was just speaking to a sister in Christ who had lived a lifetime of doing drugs until 4 years ago when she was given the gift of repentance. She is about to turn 53. She is single and worried. Christ waiting for His bride and marriage are encouraging to share with her and others who are single.
