A Wise Man Will Hear

Provers 1:5 “A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:”

The book of Proverbs is known for being the book on “wisdom” in the Bible.

All books of the Bible point to the Lord Jesus Christ, and they are understood and comprehended in him… and Proverbs is no different!

… although sometimes we miss Jesus in this book… even though he is the key to it!

Because the Bible says of Jesus Christ in Colossians 3:9 “In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

… If we are seeking to obtain and live the wisdom found in this book, we have to look to Jesus rather than ourselves or anyone else!

Proverbs is only possible in Christ.

That’s why the Bible says in James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

But, of course, receiving God’s wisdom firstly requires us seeing we “lack wisdom” to begin with. Which doesn’t necessarily come easy!

But one of the very first things we read in Proverbs about wisdom as quoted at the start is that “a wise man will hear” …

… Because while we often equate wisdom with “what we know” and “how much we know” … true wisdom is being able to see we don’t know what we don’t know (which is a lot!) … so we can then learn from someone who does.

That’s why Proverbs also then deals so much with the company we keep and who we get counsel from, because getting wisdom is not just hearing anybody… but hearing someone who is worth hearing.

Think about it, if you don’t have wisdom, you wouldn’t listen to someone who also doesn’t have wisdom in order to get it!

So who should we hear? Who do we seek wisdom from? God speaking through his word, who says later in this book “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.”

The more you get in the Bible for yourself, and are around people who are doing the same, the more you will “attain unto wise counsels” … that we all so badly need for all decisions in life, and none of more importance than concerning our own salvation.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
