The One Sin That Matters Above All Else
John 16:8 “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:”
John 16:9 “Of sin, because they believe not on me;”
These verses are Jesus Christ talking about the ministry of the Holy Spirit in this world.
Here we find that one of the main things that the Holy Spirit does is to reprove the world of “sin”. So any church or Christian that never speaks about sin or that says sin is OK is not showing the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
But what is interesting is to note is that the specific sin that Jesus talked about here is the sin of not believing on him.
Because what actually condemns us isn’t so much all the sins we have committed in our life, which are many for all of us if we are being honest…
… the sin that condemns us is the sin of rejecting Jesus Christ who God sent to save us from our sins.
The fact is, none of us got a choice in being born into this world as sinners. That doesn’t make sin ok, but that’s how it is. What we are held guilty for ultimately is not the fact that sinners do what sinners do.
… But what we do get a choice in, and what we are held accountable for, is what we do with Jesus Christ who graciously and freely extends to us salvation from our sin if we would just believe on him.
The Bible is clear that all have sinned. So we are all on the same sinking ship. But God has given us a chance to abandon that ship and live. And so it then comes down to do we want and do we take God’s salvation from sin?
If you were on a sinking ship and someone threw you a line to grab onto and you didn’t take it because you didn’t trust that person offering you salvation, who’s fault would it be then?
What Jesus was teaching here, and what the Bible confirms throughout, is that there is one specific sin that will ultimately matter.
It is important to realize that all our sins in our life we have ever committed can be confessed, forgiven and forsaken… and that’s possible because Jesus bore and paid for them all when he died to save every human being to have ever lived.
So that leaves the only sin that cannot ever be forgiven… which is rejecting Jesus Christ to save you from sin. He’s paid for them all, do you want salvation? And all of our life ultimately boils down to the simple case of whether we believed on him to save us or not.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
