Genesis 40:17 – And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.
Genesis 40:18 – And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days:
Genesis 40:19 – Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.
Genesis 40:20 – And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.
Genesis 40:21 – And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand:
Genesis 40:22 – But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.
Daniel 5:22 – And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;
Daniel 5:23 – But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:
Daniel 5:24 – Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.
Daniel 5:25 – And this is the writing that was written, Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.
Daniel 5:26 – This is the interpretation of the thing: Mene; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.
Daniel 5:27 – Tekel; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.
Daniel 5:28 – Peres; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
Hello readers, time for another blog today. Just tell the truth. I’ve been thinking about two people, Joseph and Daniel. You know what, they delivered some gunbarrel straight truth, these guys. It’d be hard to find two more godly men in the Bible, examples who we should follow. Well these guys had a different spirit in them, and it’s going to take you having a different spirit to be like one of these guys… it’s going to take the Holy Spirit.
In a world and a time where noone can tell it straight and nobody likes it straight… let’s have a look at Joseph and Daniel. Well Joseph was in prison, and there were some other fellows in there with him. They had some dreams and they didn’t know what the dreams meant. So they asked Joseph. He was their go to guy? Why was that? Because Joseph’s life had proved itself. There was something different, something genuine about him. He had wisdom, he was upright, he could be counted on? Could that be you? Are you someone that people go to for God’s word, for truth, for clarity, for meaning? If you are a Christian, you should be someone who can tell people truth. You shouldn’t be as clueless as this lost world, you shouldn’t be tossed and turned and confounded and amazed and uncertain in the times we live in. See, whereas the world doesn’t know what things mean, what’s what, what’s right, what’s wrong, what’s happening, what’s going to happen, what’s truth… anything really, you should have some answers… not your own… but answers from God’s word.
It’s easy to read this story of Joseph telling the men their dreams and yet miss it… but just think about what he said to the baker. He told the baker, you’re going to die in three days. Imagine you having to deliver such news. How do you go at telling people the truth about where they are at in life? It’s not about being mean, the baker said tell me what it means, and Joseph told him straight, Joseph didn’t lie. You’ll never be worth your salt as a Christian if you don’t have enough love for God and others to tell them the truth.
Did Joseph hate the baker? No. But he told him the truth. And the truth is, if you reject Christ, if you don’t get saved by repenting and believing on the Son of God personally, you are headed for hell. That is the certain outcome. You have been warned.
Do you think you’re a better Christian than Joseph was? Holier? More loving? More upright? More just? See, Joseph was faithful enough to God and thus to other also not to tell them a bunch of lies. He told it straight. No double talk, not skirting the issue, no misdirection, no manipulation, no twisting, no smoothing things over, no easing the message. Do you think it was hard for him to look the baker in the eyes and tell him mate, the news is no good… the birds are going to be eating your flesh about now in three days time. See, for some people the news is no good, for someone who has rejected Christ, who is living in sin… there is no good news. We live in a world that only wants to hear good. I’ve been reading Jeremiah recently… they wanted him to shut up because he never could tell them what they wanted to hear. They wanted to hear that they were going to be fine, despite God’s word saying Babylon was coming… and it wasn’t fine. Of course it was a test of Joseph’s commitment to the truth, it was a test of his courage. It’s never fun telling people things they don’t want to hear. But just because it wasn’t a lovely truth, doesn’t mean it wasn’t the truth.
Well let’s go to the example of Daniel. He’s gotten a bit older, the king he knew died and the king’s son, Belshazzar, is reigning in his place. See, Daniel’s out of sight and out of mind now, he’s an old fuddy duddy with his religion that belongs back in history along with God’s word, and there’s this new hot shot know it all son who’s on the throne who thinks he knows better than his dad, than the God of his dad, who thinks he’s pretty great. He’s going to throw a party in a time of war as a show of strength, he’s going to show God that God is nothing to him and he mocks God in his feast. Well time is going by and they’re having a good time, the wine if flowing and people and getting fat on their flesh. But God breaks it up. A hand comes writing on the wall writing some words that are completely alien to everyone in the realm.
The writing was on the wall. Is the writing on the wall in your life? Have you seen the writing? You’re in trouble with God sinner, you’re in trouble with God in unbelief and rebellion and disobedience. The problem is, the words that were written… they couldn’t understand! That’s our Bible folks. This lost unsaved world and even Christians have the word of God, but they don’t know it, they don’t understand it, they don’t get it. They need a preacher. A man of God who understands the Bible to deliver it straight to them. Lost, disobedient sinners need people who have the Spirit of God who can tell them what it’s saying. Maybe the Bible is a strange language to you, you’re so far from God your dead mind has no capacity to understand or receive it. You don’t get God or the things of God, you’re spiritually as dead as a rock and as barren as a brick.
God has sent preachers and teachers the whole way through history, men who faithfully delivered and expounded the word of God. Because sinful man has gotten so far from God and God’s word and God’s way, it’s all a strange language to them. You know society is bad when God’s word has become an alien thing to them. See, nowdays you’re the weirdo, you’re the bigot, you’re the idiot… you believe in Noah’s flood, you believe in marriage being between a man and a woman. Nonetheless, the truth is still the truth. Right is still right. Wrong is still wrong. God is still God. Daniel and Joseph could’ve changed the message, but it wouldn’t have altered the truth of what was going to happen. Similarly the truth of what is going to happen based on what we do with Jesus Christ and his word… that’s what people need to hear and know, because it’s happening, no matter how much of a bed you make in lies and smooth talk.
Well they bring Daniel in… he’s their last option, Belshazzar tries other sources of interpreting the writing on the wall and they’re a bunch of idiots, they can’t tell him nothing. They’ve got no truth, no understanding, no revelation, nothing for him. They can’t help. Nothing in this world can help you reader, only God’s word, the gospel of Jesus Christ… that’s all you’ve got. But boy that’s last resort for most of us isn’t it. We’ll try just about anything else before repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, before acknowledging the truth.
So Daniel comes in, and he knows what it means. See, he’s got the Spirit of God in him… they know that. They know that about him. He wasn’t at the party. Where would’ve you been that night? At the party or alone in prayer? Daniel wasn’t part of all the king’s garbage. He wasn’t doing what everyone else was doing. And Daniel gets the meaning of the words from God. You want to understand God’s word? Ask him to show you. Come before him in humility and you’ll be surprised how God’s word opens to you. God gives grace to the humble.
But there’s a problem. The message isn’t good. The message is that Belshazzar, you’re a goner. You’ve been weighed in the balances and found wanting. What’s he saying there? Belshazzar, o mighty king of the known world… your life is in trouble with God. You’re in sin. You’re judged. And furthermore, God’s taken the kingdom from you, you’re finished and Babylon is finished pal. Daniel told him what it meant. Do you think it’s easy to stand before someone who at a word can have you tortured and killed, do you think it’s easy to rebuke a king with the truth of God’s word? Daniel rebuked Belshazzar throwing away everything his dad had given him… his dad had learnt the hard way and Belshazzar threw it all away like many stupid children do today.
Are you brave enough to say you’re a better person, a better Christian, than Joseph or Daniel was? Both of them delivered the truth of God’s word. They delivered hard truth, unpopular truth, honest truth… THE truth. They gave kings God’s word. They put God first in their lives, and they were go to guys because of it. Both copped persecution, both were treated wrong, Daniel ended up in a lion’s den and you’ll be in the lion’s den for daring to believe and follow Jesus Christ and stand for truth and refuse to bow to anything and anyone else. In spite of the lions den, in spite of false accusations, in spite of being cruelly mistreated, in spite of it all… they remained faithful to truth, committed to truth, because they had a different spirit, an excellent spirit… the Spirit of God… that’s what, that’s who we need in us.
How do you want to help people? Tell them the truth. There’s nothing in here that Daniel or Joseph were mean about it. When asked, when required, when the open door was there, they told the truth. See, we have the Bible given to us so we can know things. A Christian’s job is to relay faithfully what the Bible says, be it good or bad, for the other person’s good. Belshazzar could’ve cried out to God, but he didn’t, he went on partying in the same night he would be killed. He was an idiot. Daniel’s life spoke long before he spoke to the king… and sometimes your life speaks first, and then people call for you for answers. See, these guys had lives that were well known and observed. Sometimes we try so hard to witness to people when the epistle of our life has already put them off. If you’re faithful to Jesus Christ in your life, you’ll have many opportunities to tell people the truth and make a difference in their lives. God will open the door, and instead of ramming it down someone’s throat while you’re living a hypocritical disobedient life yourself, God will promote you to the honor of serving him when your personal walk with God is right.
When you are obeying God in your own life, in the little God has given you, you wil shine as a light. What does light do? One light gives light to the whole world, your light can shine far and wide in this world. And tell them all the truth, not just what you think they want to hear. We need the whole truth, not convenient truths, not half truths, not the good bits, people need to hear what God’s word says. Daniel and Joseph both had great courage and great faith in their God and his infallible word. They knew the truth, they told the truth. We need to acknowledge the truth, know the truth, and we need to just tell the truth.
Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 30 y/o Bible Blogger. I was new to blogging once! God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to bring it to others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ and I am a Lord Jesus Christ follower. He is faithful even though I rarely am to him. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and stake my life on it. My destination is heaven. As they say, I’m just a passin’ through this world… although most of the time it’s more like hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports – particularly cricket… I currently work on an orchard and a side hobby business of mine is growing vegetables etc – they are good for you! I love writing. Always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment. You can read more about me and my blog here – kjvbibletruth.com/about :)
