I Don’t Know Who I Thought I Knew!

Job 3:11 – Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

Hello readers, new blog today. I have quoted the verse above from Job, because that is the first “why” in the book of Job. Through this book a theme emerges, the theme of why. We have already discussed this a little in blogs on Job as we’ve gone along. Job had plenty of whys. Many of Job’s whys were directed toward who God was, where God was, what God was doing, it was Job trying to rationalize and understand the circumstances of his life. In this book Job is saying, and it’s a statement we are going to discuss today… I don’t know who I thought I knew. Of course we know God was bringing Job to a greater understanding of him. Job would later say… But now mine eye seeth thee.

So using the book of Job as a platform to launch from, today I want to be talk about I don’t know who I thought I knew. What could cause Job to end up with this kind of a thought? Job didn’t understand how is it possible that God can be sovereign, yet bad things happen to people. If he’s sovereign than that means he knows it’s going on, and if he only does good… where on earth is he? We may well tackle this in a future blog. Job had led a life of faithful service to God, in fact there was none more righteous, there was none better than Job in the whole earth. Yet this entire episode in his life where his world got turned upside down turned him into thinking… I don’t know who I thought I knew. Why else would he be asking whys?

But we want to apply this to our situation today. There are many people today who truly don’t know who they think they know. We know how Job’s story turned out, and we know he was the real deal. God let his trial be recorded so we can take lesson from it today. So today, there are many of us out there who profess the Lord Jesus Christ. There are many that say… I know him. There are heaps of Christians right? Even though they seem to be in decline, there are vast numbers of people who claim to be Christian. There are many that speak on behalf of God… like Job’s friends did. Heaps of people say and sincerely think they know him. Yet do you really? Jesus said of the narrow road of the way of life… few there be that find it. The scariest thing will be to find out that you never knew Jesus… and he never knew you. Matthew 7:23 – And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. But it’d be better to find out now than too late… right? This blog isn’t to destroy your faith, but to build it.

Let’s be clear, Job is so far more of a godly man than any of us could ever be. But from the book we can learn so much. So it’s not criticize Job time at all, Job was going through an unimaginable time, a time God was sovereign over. Job was trying to find God in all of it, but he couldn’t. Job 9:11 – Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not. We like to think we know God, that we know everything, we’ve got everything sorted… but when we truly start to understand things, we understand how finite, how limited, how wretched we are. God is in all things, even if we don’t know where he is at, what he’s doing. He is God after all. There are many people that don’t perceive who God is, or where God is at… God can only be known through his word under the illumination and enlightenment of the Holy Spirit. We will see that God’s word is how we sort out if we really know him as we say, if we truly are Christians as we claim. Anyone can say anything after all.

You know, there is a thing in Christianity where many people say they are Christians, they claim the name of Jesus… yet they come down on the side against his word. Things don’t add up. Jesus said in Matthew 15:8 – This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. Jesus knew their hearts, and many people fall into this bracket. And it would do us well, as the disciples said when Jesus said one of them would betray him… they said is it I? Is it I?It’s a good place to be in many ways when we stop looking on others, and look at ourselves honestly, and ask is it I? Am I the problem here? Am I the one with the issues here? Am I the one in sin? Am I the one doing damage to the cause of Jesus Christ? Am I the fake? Am I the pretender? Am I really a betrayer? Do I plant a kiss on Christ’s cheek with a purse of silver in my hand? Am I  the one who doesn’t know who I think I know?

We can be pretty confident and sincere. We can be VERY confident and sincere in our beliefs. In what we think we know. In what we think is going on. Sincerity, zeal, enthusiasm… while all good… are not the indicator of whether you’re abiding in truth or not. You can be sincerely… wrong. You can be zealous… without knowledge. You know how deceived we can be? You know how deceive we can be about thinking we know who we say we know? Look to the Bible. They nailed Christ to a cross, the God they claimed to know and love and serve. Jesus said in John 5:39 – Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. Again, John 8:54 – Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God. The Bible says at the start of John that he (Christ) came to his own, and his own received him not. That’s deception people. Look at this… John 16:2 – They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

There is a delusion coming to this world, so great that Jesus said if possible, even the very elect would be deceived. There is a famine coming… a famine so strong that people will in Amos 8:12 – And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it. You start to see the role of God’s word, the Holy Bible, in all this. And consequentially you would understand why it’s Satan’s life work to cast doubt, to draw you away from, to lie about God’s word. You want safety from deception? Get in God’s word. That’s the safe place. That’s the hiding place.

For many people, they don’t want to be challenged on whether they truly know who they claim to know. The Bible says… 1 John 2:4 – He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. Pretty strong stuff. Do we actually know the God we claim to know and love and serve? After reading 1 John through, it becomes apparent that one of the many reasons why the book was written… was so that we could KNOW things. And that’s the Bible. There are many warnings written concerning them that entice and seduce you, there are many proofs and records so that you can know and be assured, so that you wont be deceived, so that you will be kept from idols and ultimately so that you can know the true God and eternal life.

God’s word is so vital, it’s how a Christian grows… by feeding on God’s word. God’s word is what forms the very image of Christ. Experiences don’t, feelings don’t… in fact that’s how you get messed up. Back in the Old Testament, God forbade them to ever to make an image of him. Deuteronomy 4:12 – And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice. The image of the incorruptible Christ is formed from his incorruptible word. We are to from our image of God from the word of God alone. God spoke… and this is the record. So what we see is how we can each gauge for ourselves whether we truly know who we say we know.

Here’s a verse in John 14:21 – He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. People say they’re Christians, yet come down on the side against his word, yet live in violation of it, yet don’t abide in it. Yet the proof that you love God is that you will obey his commandments… and what are they? They’re his word. Notice the second half of the verse… and it’s not coincidence the two thoughts are linked… and I will manifest myself to him. You see there are a lot of people claiming the name, but they don’t know Jesus at all. You want Jesus to manifest himself to you… no wonder the Christ people claim is so hidden from them, and thus the truth is hid from them, and thus they don’t know at all who they claim to serve. That’s why people end up on the side against truth, against right, against good… against God’s word.

As we go along in the book of Job, Job is saying… I don’t even know who God is anymore. I thought I knew God. I thought we were on the same page. This shouldn’t be happening. If Job could get to this place, hopefully we don’t need a train wreck to finally be challenged to seek for God, and truly come to a knowledge of who he is. He might not be who you think he is. You will be disappointed when you realize God is not that idol you have made, an idol fashioned with the tools of man’s imagination. People have such ignorance and unbelief of the word of the God they claim to know. Jesus said to search the scriptures, he said it so they would be able to get their self deluded thinking straight… and in them you might find out some home truths about yourself, and may throw what you think upside down in the light of what is actually true about you. Those people Jesus spoke to were utterly convinced yet utterly deceived about who they were, about the God they thought they knew. I don’t know who I thought I knew. Eliphaz’s friends didn’t know, Job thought he didn’t know… what makes you so comfortable in a reality that is not true? Test your salvation against God’s word, test your God against God’s word. Maybe, just maybe, you don’t know who you think you know. And the Bible is written so you can put that write, so you CAN know who you think you know… because Jesus will reveal himself to you.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 30 y/o Bible Blogger. I was new to blogging once! God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to bring it to others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ and I am a Lord Jesus Christ follower. He is faithful even though I rarely am to him. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and stake my life on it. My destination is heaven. As they say, I’m just a passin’ through this world… although most of the time it’s more like hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports – particularly cricket… I currently work on an orchard and a side hobby business of mine is growing vegetables etc – they are good for you! I love writing. Always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment. You can read more about me and my blog here – kjvbibletruth.com/about :)
