The Wonderful Importance Of The Virgin Birth Of Jesus Christ, The Firstborn Of Every Creature
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
At Christmas, we have the opportunity to particularly reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ. I hope you take time out your busy schedule to remember him.
In truth, many people have as much room for Jesus at Christmas as the inns in Bethlehem had for Jesus and his mother at his birth. Jesus was born in a manger… a cattle trough… “because there was no room for him in the inn”… Has much really changed?
And yet out there in the cow shed was where the action was unfolding, it’s easy to miss where God is moving! … and our Saviour’s birth was so special that the calendar revolves around his birth and not yours or mine! Because everything is made by him and for him, and our future and eternity depends on him, even if you are blissfully unaware or willfully ignorant as Bethlehem was.
It is a privilege to be saved and serve God, not an entitlement. We weren’t so good God had to save us, and yet he did, because he’s higher than us, because he’s a gracious, loving, good, just, true and ONLY God.
Jesus Christ’s birth was very special because it was God entering his own creation, made of a woman, God dwelling in a temple of flesh and bones and blood. God didn’t delegate out our salvation, he took care of it personally “God will provide himself a lamb”
…That’s a God I can serve, one not distant and removed, but one who tasted death for me, the innocent for the guilty… so I need never die. And I will never die because Jesus Christ lives forever more, my life is bound up in his life, and physical death has gone from the hammerblow of hell, to the pathway to life.
It can be for you too.
This Christmas 2025, I want to focus on one aspect about the birth of Christ which is of vital importance, the fact he was virgin born.
Maybe you never knew that Jesus was virgin born… or maybe you have … but perhaps you have never understood WHY all this time… I mean, cool, but who cares? Why does it matter that Jesus was virgin born?
Let me just tell you that the fact that Jesus was virgin born is a linchpin of your salvation that God offers to you as a gift… a gift wrapped up in his Son… but a gift left unwrapped for all of eternity by many, hopefully not you though! You gotta take hold of that salvation people, noone can do it for you!
But how is Jesus’ virgin birth a linchpin of our salvation? Well, if Jesus was not virgin born, he could not have paid for your sins, or mine, or anyones… because he would have been no different to you or I, if he had a human father he would have been conceived and born in sin as us all are too… and we would be yet without hope in this broken fallen sin cursed world.
Consider the verse quoted at the start… and in Isaiah 7:14, a wicked king of Israel received a miraculous sign of deliverance from God in an unusual manner, the prophet told him that a virgin would conceive and bear a son… this would be the basis for the victory he would have, and we all would share in. …. because the entry of Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, and virgin born, is the basis for any and every victory we could ever have.
Israel was a pretty wicked and degenerate seed of evildoers as Isaiah described, and in amongst all this sin and disobedience to God… God went ahead in his grace and mercy to a new seed altogether, and that is what the virgin birth is all about… godly seed untainted, uncorrupted by sin.
And talk about a sign from God… a virgin conceiving! That just doesn’t happen does it. It was a one off, one of a kind birth, a miracle, and special because it meant Jesus did not have a biological father.
Jesus’ parents were Mary and Joseph, and though they were espoused… they had not consummated the marriage yet. And they were doing what God’s word said to do, not have sex before marriage. They were honouring God and each other.
Because any sex before marriage is sin. Simple as that. Society may have changed, God has not, and his ways are still the way to a happy marriage.
No, God is not confused on this issue, he’s gunbarrel clear on it, and if you did love Christ, you’d stop trying to find ways around God’s law, and rejoice in how righteous his rules are and how good they are for us all.
Far too many Christians think that sex before marriage is acceptable, when it is not, according to the Bible… the Bible, the word of God, remember that? Factor that into your equation. Do it God’s way, and marry that person, or leave them alone! If you take a look at society today and all the divorce, cheating, dysfunction, distrust, fair to say us making up our own little moral codes isn’t working too well.
And yes we all “love” that person… until we dump them or them us for the next one we “love”. And yes, maybe you get upset at me writing this, but I’m just telling you what the Bible says. If I want to be a minister of God’s word, I’ve gotta tell you what the Bible says, and the Bible tells us not to be deceived about this issue, or any other one either. Everything I’ve ever written applies to me first before anyone else. Myself and yourself can repent of our sins and ask God for his grace anytime we want, but let’s stop arguing with God and start agreeing with him about what he’s said for our good.
But if you can make it past being offended, now to the reason why Jesus being virgin born is so critical! And to truly understand it, you have to go waaaaaaaay back to Genesis, to Adam and Eve, the first human beings God created… and you also have to believe Genesis is literally true or you won’t literally get it.
It’s amazing how many Christians don’t believe God in Genesis 1:1… amazing. Jesus did…. he quoted Genesis, he said “have ye never read?” He said “it is written”.
You see, the Bible does not teach evolution, it teaches that God made everything that was made in six days, he did not use evolution to do it, death is not the hero but the enemy, and God made one man and one woman in a very good and perfect and flawless creation, and he brought them together in the institution of marriage, and from these two has come every single human being to have ever lived… hence we all come from “Adam”… not an ape.
See, you have a father, and your father had a father, and he had a father and this is the same for every single person to have ever walked the earth, if any person from any part of the world goes from their dad to grandad to great grandad… you end up at Adam.
We all come from Adam, we are all “in Adam”! So that is essential to understanding the significance of the virgin birth.
Because Jesus didn’t have an earthly father. Joseph was not his biological father… God was his father. He was generated from God… being God in the flesh, his seed was not from a human father but God the Father. But why is that important?
Well… because Adam sinned. “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”
Sin in Genesis changed everything. And it explains everything. You want to know why the world is like it is? Sin. You want to know why you are the way you are? Sin. You know what Jesus was sent to save us from? Sin! “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins”!
See… you and I are born in Adam, that is, we are born in sin, I was born in sin. That is our first birth. And that’s why we sin, because we are sinners by birth and by nature. We sin by choice, it’s in our DNA to sin… and God knows that “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”
… and because of this fact, this is why God never instituted a way for us to save ourselves. There is no law God could impose on us that could save us, it could only condemn us more because we were so fallen. The problem was in who we are, and the deeper you go inside yourself trying to pull something good out, the more hopeless state you are in, which shows you everything that is wrong within modern psychology and humanism, as the Bible says “Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.”
And so the Old Testament law, which was given to revive the dead conscience to God, to show us how unrighteous and ungodly and separated from God we were… it takes us to God’s grace and mercy. The Old Testament law took the high priest through a thick veil to a special seat … called the MERCY seat… that is where God met the priest. It is where God still meets us all today “I will have mercy, and not sacrifice”
We need mercy because “in Adam, all die”. Christians trying to bring sinners to Christ without God’s instrument, the law, to do so, just creates false converts, that’s why churches are replete with Christians who don’t resemble what a Christian is defined to be in the Bible “and the rent is made worse”.
You know why and how God saved me? His mercy. I am a sinner who non stop sinned against God, and he had mercy on me. And his grace and mercy has transformed my life. See, God is honest with us about our sin, he correctly diagnoses our issue, and he has provided for it… his Son, virgin born, not tainted with sin, but rather… sinless!
And we also need to understand something else about coming from Adam. Because the Bible does teach Adam was made in the image of God originally… but yet you may have noticed in life, if you haven’t yet you will!, that if you look at at other people including yourself… you may have seen that not many people truly look like God… over there just another liar, over here just another cheat, and in the mirror just another hypocrite, just another fallen human being!
Something’s not right. Surely God doesn’t look like this. And no he doesn’t. You see, because although we were originally made in the image of God, we lost that image when Adam sinned. It was all his fault! And we actually bear the image of fallen Adam… not God. That’s why none of us look very godly as we swear, curse, lust, covet, envy, and are proud, bitter, lie, cheat, steal and so on.
Adam made a big choice to sin against God, which had consequences for us all, and disobedience brought the curse of sin upon all of us… and we live and groan under the curse of sin. The very fact you wither up and die is proof of sin. The fact of ageing, the fact of sickness, the fact of all the evil in this world… it’s all because of a curse introduced by the disobedience of the first man and first woman who we all come from.
That’s how harmful disobedience to God is, that’s how much sin hurts other people. Adam and Eve’s sin hurt us, and our sin hurts us and each other. See, talking about sex and marriage earlier, maybe you think God’s a killjoy, but he’s not, he wants you to have a happy faithful blessed marriage and life… but that’s found in doing things God’s way. And he knows we are sinners, but if you want and anytime you want it… he will give you grace not to sin, and not to hurt yourself or hurt others in sin… because sin hurts, and that’s why our society is hurting more and more.
Where were we? Oh yes, Adam sinned! And we are in Adam… uh oh! … But enter the grace of God! Right from the moment these two fell and the dreadful consequences of disobedience and departure from God began… yet in all that was God’s promise also, as God began to draw back mankind in cords of his love. He had already foreseen our problem “in Adam” and he promised a seed, the seed of the woman way back in Genesis 3… and that seed of the woman is Christ… the virgin born Son of God. He would save us from our sins, he would give us a new family line, a new genealogy, a new start in life, free from the sin that Adam plunged us into, because while Adam’s disobedience defined our first family tree, it’s the last Adam (Christ’s) obedience that defines the final family line… which I hope you’re in by believing on and trusting him!
The Bible says “The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.” If you ever got saved, you who were baptized into Christ by the Holy Spirit… you are now in Christ. Christ’s virgin birth has meant you can be born again, born into the family of God… a family you can only be born into, hence “ye must be born again”.
Jesus began a new genealogy, beginning at his virgin birth “when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.”. And at the cross a new group of people unbeknown to the world was created… a peculiar group of people known as Christians… that’s me and I hope you!
That’s a lot to digest!
And so to sum up, when you believe in Christ, because he was virgin born… you are no longer in Adam, you are now placed “in Christ” …“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” I hope you have this life! Eternal life!
As Thomas said, My Lord and My God!
Thank you God for giving me life in Jesus Christ! What wonderful things God does to us and for us when we get saved, which we didn’t even know! … as Mary said “For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.” …Amen!
The virgin birth is the key to your new birth, it’s key to your eternal life, it is in fact your only hope of escaping the death trap of sin which we are born into. It’s how you escape and are liberated from the human condition of sin. It explains everything about Christianity that has power of God on it and Christianity which is lifeless, because there is no new life through Christ’s life in them. Many professing Christians sadly are still “in Adam” trying to live in Christ.
This Christmas, may his virgin birth not just be a dead fact, but the source for new joy and happiness inside you. Because no smaller miracle happens in your life as at Jesus’ birth, when in the dry, barren ground of our heart, that little seed of the gospel sown produces new life which will live forever. To his praise, and his glory… happy Christmas, may Christ’s light shine on your life and in your heart and soul!

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
