Stand Still A While… That I May Shew Thee The Word Of God

1 Samuel 9:27 “And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on), but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.”

Do you want to get something out of God’s word? Not someone else… you! Be pretty nice to get to know him from his word don’t you think?

For most people, the Bible is a parable that they know not, that relates not to their life, neither directs them… it’s like Old Testament manna, food from heaven but called so because the children of Israel could not discern what it was.

I hope you have the sincere desire for God’s word that is expected even of a kingdom babe, after all “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.”

And it is possible to go from a riddle to the heartbeat of your life, as it is the book of life… but it all begins with being shown, because you cannot see until you are helped to see.

…For the word “show” means “To exhibit or present to the view of others” and “To make or enable to see”… maybe you’re here, nothing wrong with that.

In the verse quoted above, a “goodly” young man named Saul had the great invitation and privilege of being shown the word of God by the prophet Samuel.

Samuel was a preacher, and the Bible teaches that if God is ever going to be revealed to you through his word… it’s going to take a preacher.

We are in a world that hates preachers “every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians”… but nonetheless, still, as ever “it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”

And so if you ever want to see anything, first your attitude to preaching will have to change! And preachers of God are those precious few “that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.”

You know, even the angels of heaven get excited by the preaching of God’s word, and what treasures of God’s word that the preacher brings out! The horror and outrage at preaching, by claiming Christians much less the world, shows just out of tune with heaven we really are.

So to know God’s word, you’re going to need a preacher… but not just that! Far more…

You’re going to need an attitude shift… because are you willing to be shown? Not many are. Could you possibly be shown? Could you lay down the contentions, quarreling and being offended? Could you lay down what you think like you know better?

See, Saul did not know God’s word. But Samuel did. Until your attitude goes from showing God how it is to being shown by God how it is… you’ll never be able to see past yourself to see anything truly… much less the wonders of God’s word.

… you’re also going to need to “stand still” …and it might take a while! …Do you have “a while” for God? Would you see enough value in God to wait on him and patiently invest your time and attention in him… or does he just wait on you?

Back in Exodus, Pharaoh made sure the Hebrews were so busy and occupied by their “taskmasters” that they didn’t have time to even think about leaving… much less leave. And Satan and this world will so clutter your life with “tasks” you’ll never have time to see anything.

If you’re too busy for God… you’re too busy. End of. How often Bible reading is the first thing that goes at the start of the day and close of the evening… and everything in between… no time, because you have other masters to please! And which means you are not serving God.

… you’re also going to have to clear you mind. See, Saul had some other pressing things on his mind, his lost asses… which was the only reason he ever sought out the preacher in the first place. Like in most cases, people turn to the man of God when all other avenues have failed, hoping God can pull off a miracle for them but with no real interest in God at all.

But Samuel told Saul everything’s been taken care of and provided for… you don’t need to worry, just start listening! “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

… you may also have to get alone with God. God deals personally with us. You will stand before God for yourself. You must know and be right with him for yourself.

Samuel cleared Saul’s distractions to being shown God’s word… not only the lost asses he was so worried about, but he also said “bid the servant pass on” because Samuel was going to talk to Saul specifically. When you’re preached at, stop worrying about others, and hiding amongst and behind others… God wants to deal with you!

For so many Christians, they are hiding from God’s voice in “community” and “ministry”. They keep moving also, because they’re like Adam hiding amongst the trees from the voice of God walking in the garden of Eden… is this you?

And so Samuel opened the word of God to Saul, as he stood still, listened and obeyed (for now) the word of God… and found it to be all it was cracked up to be… and more. And it was wonderful and gracious for him “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” You truly don’t know what you’re missing out on!

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
