The 1 Lost Matters More Than The 99 Safe And Sound… Go 100% For Jesus!
Luke 15:4 “What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?”
Recently I saw something pretty incredible in this story that Jesus Christ told about a man leaving the 99 sheep that he had to go and rescue the 1 sheep that he had lost!
Yes, primarily this is a wonderful picture of repentance and salvation… but this story also unfurls like a flower, and tells us so much about the character of God and even instructional in the issue of what Bible to read.
These days, which Bible you use is a big issue in modern Christianity. Well, to clarify, it’s an issue if you hold to the King James Bible!
For all the different Bibles out there, the only time they find commonality, unity and harmony together is in their united chorus against the KJV.
In my life, I’ve talked to so many Christians who really don’t care about the details and accuracy of God’s word, I’ve had all the discussions, and I enjoy it and respect people’s positions.
I’ve heard the endless genealogies and the questions instead of answers! So much doubt has been injected into the Christian bloodstream, and I’ve learnt that at the end of the day it’s a faith issue. And like that Jordan river parting only after the priests feet stepped in first… there will be no validation or revelation for the believer until there is the step of faith first.
Truthfully, I’ve found the main issue isn’t Bible versions itself, but really just a lack of care for God’s word itself. If your Christian walk is based on God’s word, you’re gonna seek pretty hard on this issue.
Because what Bible you use is a foundational issue of faith. If we don’t have God’s word, there’s not much we can do.
And so I don’t know what your personal trigger points may be on the issue, but I’ve found that quite a few think that as long as the “majority” of it is right and the general message is there, the details really don’t matter.
But that’s not true! …because the details do matter, they absolutely matter to God just as this 1 lost sheep mattered to the shepherd in this story.
See, this guy has 100 sheep, and 99 are safe and sound, but he leaves those 99 to get the 1.
For this man, it wasn’t acceptable or right or “okay” to have 99% of the sheep… amazingly, he cared more about the 1% that was lost than the 99% that was safe and sound.
To him … 99 out of a 100 was not “good enough”… so why would it be to you?
Because it was expected by Jesus that this man should care, because this story is presented in a question, beginning with Jesus saying “what man of you” … he’s saying… who would not care about that lost sheep?
Why do you not care about the missing 1%? Everything we learn about God is that he cares about the details, he knows the number of hairs on our head, he sees the sparrow fall, he spent a whole book of the Bible numbering his people.
Whether we go to heaven or hell depends on the details in his book, man I hope he’s got the details right!
Come on Christians! Even if the majority, the overarching theme is generally correct, (if that only were actually so)… it’s the part that’s not correct which matters more.
Even look at our own lives and how we stand before God, we can do pretty good most of the time, but it’s our sin and our stuff up that really matters doesn’t it.
You could have a marriage and be faithful for ten years and only commit adultery once… what’s going to matter more, all the days you were faithful… or the one time you weren’t?
And so if your Bible is missing something as compared to the “originals”… if it’s the “best we have” but not entirely there… then you’re missing out on something big, and you should care about it.
… Did you know our very salvation relies on the fact that God is 100% in all things? His prophets were 100%, his Son was 100% righteous, his coat didn’t even have a seam in it, Jesus wasn’t happy with even a fragment of bread crust being lost… you really think God lost his word someplace?
It’s like when Elijah was taken to heaven in 2 Kings 2, and the “sons of the prophets” say to Elisha, let’s go look for him, God might have lost him in translation someplace! And Elisha says don’t bother, but they go looking anyway…
God didn’t lose Elijah, and he hasn’t lost any of his word either.
It may be unpopular, but get yourself a King James Bible, and go to 100% in your Christian life. And then go 100% for Jesus! Your light will shine ever so brightly in this dark little world!

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side. One thing worth pondering is that when Jesus went after that lone sheep, He did not return it to the 99, but took it home with Him.

Thanks for the comment Craig, and an interesting point! because Jesus did later reference the 99 as having no need of repentance… just showing the importance… but also relative rarity of repentance! So few of us ever repent! And so many Christians these days are so unrepentant and unbroken over their sin.
We can all have our stuff seemingly together living the Christian life and look down our noses over someone who got lost in the wilderness, but meanwhile they repented and we never did! Bit scary… because “except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish”
Thing is, we all need to repent, but very few of us ever see it, and very few of us have actually been rescued because we never thought we had anything to be rescued from
