How Divine Is Your Nature?
2 Peter 1:3 “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:”
2 Peter 1:4 “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
How divine is your nature?
I’ve met some pretty divinely natured Christians in my life… but I don’t think my nature has been or is that divine at all!
And they would probably say theirs isn’t either.
But in 2 Peter 1:4, the Bible teaches that we have been saved so that we “might” be partakers of the divine nature.
The word “might” is used… because the divine nature might or might not be present and true in our lives!
If we are saved, if we trusted in Christ’s blood to wash away our sins… we are meant to have “escaped” the corruption that is in the world through lust.
But if you are a professing Christian… just how “escaped” are you from the corruption of this world? How escaped are you from your own corrupt fallen human nature?
Can you honestly say you’ve escaped? Could others see that you have escaped? Or are you just like everyone else living a life dead in your sins that you were saved from?
Hmm!
And “escaping” isn’t getting a self righteous delusion that everyone can see the hypocrisy of bar ourselves… and escaping is not going to live on a rock, like Samson did in Judges 15:8.
… Because even if you go and live on a rock, even if you go and live out in the middle of nowhere to escape all the other sin and sinners… you still can’t escape yourself and the sinful human nature that is within you, as it is in all of us.
Where are you going to run to escape yourself and the truth about yourself?
The fact is, which we must each personally face, is that we all have the same human nature and condition of sin… that’s why we all are guilty of lust, envy, greed, selfishness, pride, lying etc.
Those things, and many other unsavory attributes (the opposite of virtues!) they ARE the human nature… and just about any person, religious or not, could tell you how bad human nature is and that humans are just like that.
How can we get beyond this? How can we escape that? By pretending it away? By isolating yourself? By trying harder? By doing better?
No… but just about all religious and even non religious people are trying to do better or be better versions of themselves… but all of them share the same problem… they are lacking the divine power to trasncend their own sinful human nature.
That’s why God as Creator is the first thing that we are presented with about God in the Bible, because a divine nature takes creative power, and only God has creative power!
And this word “power”, and more specifically God’s power, is what is required to have the divine nature. And in verse 3, we read “his divine power”. Who’s divine power? “His” divine power”. Who is “his”. God!
The Christian life entirely operates on the power of God. It starts with God’s divine power, when we are born again of the Spirit of God…
… and it never stops needing God’s power… but having God’s power!
The thing is, and we must realize this, is that Christianity is about so much more than just “getting out of hell”. Christianity is a new creature, with a new nature.
So this divine nature is the whole point of Christianity!
Yet somehow, this divine nature is missing from many Christians and their Christianity… including my own.
And that’s why our lives are so barren, unfruitful and unfulfilled. And our lives ought not be like that!
Christianity is about being “Christ-like”. But just how Christlike are our lives really?
Jesus had a divine nature, and we see that through his whole life, but think about when he forgave those who crucified him… that’s not normal human behaviour! I would’ve been saying I’ll get you guys back! You guys are going to hell! But Jesus was praying to his Father to forgive them… that’s utterly divine!
So if you are looking for the divine nature… if you are looking for a higher life and higher existence than base sinful human nature… you have to look to Jesus Christ, the divine power of God who is seated above!
We must have the power of God in our lives. I don’t have the power or strength to change myself, or to live this Christian life, or to have this divine nature.
For instance, I need God’s power to forgive, instead of hold grudges and hate.
I need God’s power to love others, instead of speak and think evil about them.
I need God’s power for purity of mind and body, instead of lust and sinful desire.
I need God’s power to love truth, rather than to seek lies.
I hope you have been made a partaker of the divine nature! Because though we all share the same planet with all sorts of horrible stuff going on… yet we can have a totally different life and existence here through the power of God.
And God wants that for us. There’s nothing he will hold back from us so that it can be our reality.
Doing life with the divine nature, through the power of God… is a very different experience and quality of life as compared to doing life in our sinful human nature.
Maybe you really think you’ve already got a divine nature. But how divine is your thought life, and how divinely natured are you really when you face setbacks in life, or when people mistreat you, or when you don’t get what you want?
Yeah… we all are hardly divine natured most of the time. But may we seek the divine nature! May we be partakers in it. And may we, through the power of God, life a life though in, yet somehow far above this sin cursed world.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
