If The Lord Would Make Windows In Heaven, Might This Thing Be?

2 Kings 7:2 “Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.”
Hello readers, happy Sunday, it’s the Lord’s day here in Adelaide, South Australia. Today I want to briefly talk about “windows in heaven”. And I’ve quoted from a verse in 2 Kings which it would be good for you to read for yourself so you can get the necessary context for yourself!
But basically put, in this scripture, Israel has been under siege. Serious siege! They’re holed up in the city of Samaria, which is like the capital city of the northern kingdom. But they’re a wicked nation, rebellious against God, guilty of idolatry… and God has brought up the mighty Syrian army against them.
And as you do, the Syrians siege them out. Why lose men trying to take the city when you can just starve them out? So the Syrian army surrounds the city, noone gets in or out and resources dwindle down to the point of where there’s no water and food and eventually you are compelled to surrender or die of thirst and starvation. Talk about between a rock and a hard place! Surrendering to the Syrians was perhaps even worse than dying! Either option was a bad loss for sure! Have you ever felt like no matter what way you go, it’s all bad! Who do you turn to? It needs to be Jesus Christ, there is no hope in any other. But of course we find out from the context that they turn on the man of God, not turn TO the man of God.
Have you ever felt under siege in your Christian life? Do you feel surrounded and cut off from the supply of grace and the Spirit of God? I know I have. And it’s been my own doing. And then I blame God. And then I wonder where is my help going to come from, and is it ever going to come? Does God see? Can he see? Does he care?
Have you ever been so dry and impoverished in your walk with God? That’s what it was like in Samaria. Things were bleak. Things were impossible.
And the wicked king of Israel blames Elisha, the man of God who is in the city, the man who they should have been listening to, but instead he’s the problem right! It’s amazing how this world blames the Bible believing Christian and ultimately, God, for the issues in society and their lives… when what has the Christian done? Told them how to be saved? Is that so bad?
It made me think, do I make enemies of Christians who tell me the truth? I have in the past. Is the person who speaks truth into my life really my enemy? Aren’t I my own worst enemy? Why do we make our only true Friend in Jesus Christ our enemy when he is who we need so badly?
But now we are at the height of the siege, when things are so bad that they’re now resorting to eating asses heads and doves dung… and each other… but in this hopeless blackness, God gives Elisha a message of hope. As the Bible says… Proverbs 15:23 “A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!”
As they’re sitting in the house, sitting around, meanwhile the king has sent his messenger to Elisha to get him, because he’s going to lop his head off to prove a point, but Elisha says in the word of the Lord that tomorrow, about this time (24 hours away! help isn’t as far away as you might think!) there’s going to be so much food in the city that noone will know what to do with it!
And that’s the context for this question that this guy says, sarcastically and in unbelief “Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be?” Have I been guilty of this mindset and question? I think I have been.
In other words, does God see? Does God care? Often it seems like there is just such a wall between us and God. Do you feel walled up to God? Do you feel like God has cut you off? But Webster’s 1828 dictionary defines window as “An opening in the wall of a building for the admission of light, and of air when necessary” and “An aperture or opening”.
We know the opening in the wall between us and Christ… the window… and the door is Jesus Christ. Yes our sins have separated us from God, but God made a way back, remember that veil? It was rent in twain and so we can go in.
At the start of this blog post, I attached a photo I took recently. It’s been so unusually cloudy this autumn and winter here where I live, but in this photo, though all the cloud, and through the cloud you can see rays of light piercing through, as if to give hope that the sun still does exist! Clouds hide the sun from us, but it is still there! If you’ve ever had that welcome ray of light through your spiritual darkness, you’ll know the reality of this verse Ecclesiastes 11:7 “Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun:”
But I thought this photo really encapsulated this idea of “windows in heaven”. Are there windows in heaven? There sure are. And there are more than just windows in heaven, if you are saved, Jesus dwells in our hearts by faith.
Maybe you’re looking for light in the gloom, and opening in the cloud that has enveloped and engulfed your life, that seems to have hidden you from the Sun of righteousness, who arises with healing in his wings. There are seasons of heaviness the Bible says, there are times that we are in that we can’t see a way out… just think of how impossible the situation was in Samaria! They’re surrounded by a huge army, no food left… the stakes could not be higher.
The Bible says in Malachi 3:10 “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” And yes, I know the prosperity preachers love to get a hold of verses like this, but it is what the Bible says, and God does want to bless us and prosper us. Maybe not with money and fame, which isn’t true prosperity, but God is more than willing to spiritually prosper us abundantly in our lives.
If God gave his Son for us, would he really withhold any other good thing we want and need from him? Prove me now herewith says God. I have, incredibly, been afraid of proving God, because what if he fails. What if he doesn’t or can’t come through? And yet the Bible promises that those that trust in him will never be ashamed. You’ll never be ashamed for having trusted in Christ. And I don’t need to give God an out. If I put him first in my life, there is abundant life promised to us in Christ Jesus.
How could you possibly come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need if God cannot be trusted, if he is not faithful who promised? The answer is, we can come boldly, because we serve the risen Christ, the Lord and Saviour, who is far above all, the most High, there is none higher.
So I hope today if you are doubting that there are windows in heaven… know that there are. Know that “the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous”. And know that “underneath are the everlasting arms”. If you read on from here, you’ll know that the guy that said this never partook in the blessedness which was just hours away, a great victory that God had won which the lepers discovered when they went to the camp of the Syrians and found in empty and deserted, with food and riches in abundance just there to be taken. It’s amazing how in our life what we see as impossible is nothing to God. And the victory is already won and we don’t even realize it. And they were so doubtful even when the lepers told them, they still didn’t believe it! God I believe, help thou mine unbelief.
Often with God, his promises are there, will we just take them? Like salvation for instance. God’s hand is outstretched… won’t we just take it? And I thought of this verse in Song of Solomon 2:9 “My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice.” You know that if you are saved, your beloved is looking forth at the windows… which he couldn’t be doing if there were no windows in heaven. God does truly care for us, yes there may seem to be no windows in heaven sometimes, but know that based on the BIBLE, there are windows in heaven, and God does see us, and “God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”… notice that word supply!? supplies are what they were cut off from in the siege!! and God will open his hand, as he has promised, and he will satisfy the desire of every living thing. May he satisfy your life today, and may the windows in heaven be abundantly opened to you as you seek the face of Jesus Christ where you are today.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
