For Those Living To Leave A Legacy

Psalm 72:17 “His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.”

Psalm 72:19 “And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.”

A lot of people construct their meaning and purpose in life around “legacy”.

Legacy means “something that is a part of your history or that remains from an earlier time” and “something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor from the past”.

To many people, what legacy means to them is making a name and doing good that they will be remembered for, and leaving something of value (to them) to future generations.

And without God, legacy really is the highest aspiration you can have in life. Legacy sees a bigger picture beyond our life and seeks an impact beyond our own lifetime.

One of the main legacies that can be left is in our children. People with kids hope in their children to carry on the name, values, ideals, memories with legacy being continued in and through them.

And while these things have some kind of value, it is important to realize that no legacy whatsoever has any lasting value without and apart from Jesus Christ.

This is because Jesus Christ is the only person with true legacy “whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” When you’re “everlasting” you’ve got a real headstart on “legacy”.

If legacy seeks to pass on something that remains, what can have more legacy than someone that always remains because he always is, always was, and always will be?

Our idea of legacy is also quite self centric because it revolves around us… but everything actually revolves around Christ, because we exist for him, not he for us “all things were created by him, and for him”. You have to remember, you’re in his story, not he in your story.

As such, any legacy that is not Christ will not last, because Christ’s legacy is forever “For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.”

Christ’s legacy certainly works for us though, because he lasts forever, he can offer a salvation that lasts forever too, because “I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever”. What a legacy God’s salvation is!

So if you want true legacy, it’s only found in one place, Jesus Christ. The only thing that will remain and last for ever is Jesus Christ, and the legacy of his death, burial and resurrection that saved and built the lives of all who believed on him.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
