Don’t Keep Things Light!

Jeremiah 23:32 “Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.”

In the book of Jeremiah, one of the many condemnations that God had for the false prophets that abounded in Jeremiah’s day was their “lightness”.

And in the book of Zephaniah, God called the prophets at that time “light and treacherous persons”. They kept things “light”. But Christianity and the things of God should never be “light”, made light of or taken lightly “But they made light of it, and went their ways”.

God, and the servant of God, isn’t and doesn’t keep things light. God’s word is meant to dig down and do deep work in our life, and keeping things light ALL the time is cheating ourselves and others.

Most churches today intentionally keep things superficial, light, feel good and fun. But that comes at a cost… because there is also no deep lasting work of God going on either “they shall not profit this people at all”

God had given his actual prophet Jeremiah a pretty heavy message, and his preaching hit on things like sin, righteousness and judgment to the intent of salvation – which is exactly what Jesus defined the ministry of the Holy Spirit to this world to be!

Did Jeremiah want to see the people hurt and destroyed as he was accused of? Hardly. In fact if they only listened to him, they would ALL have been saved. God isn’t against you or me, we might make him our enemy, but he is not.

… It’s just that God doesn’t mess us around, he goes straight to the heart of the issue, he goes deep, because it’s in the deep of our heart and souls where our problems really lie “He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.”

In the book of Genesis, at the beginning of creation, the Bible says that “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. “

So we read that before God brought forth any new life, the Spirit of God had to move on the deep first! …You will not be saved if God’s word hasn’t cut deep into your own heart, and that applies to all of us, even Mary, as Simeon said to her “Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also”

Interesting and amazing stuff happens in the deep!!! God’s word says we see “his wonders in the deep”! …we ourselves can’t see what’s really going on in other people deep down, but it can be very surprising what bubbles to the surface!

In the context of leviathan “king over all the children of pride” the Bible says “he maketh the deep to boil like a pot”. What’s bubbling and boiling away in your heart? What condition lies deep down that God’s sweet Holy Spirit is trying to expose and fix?

So thank God that he goes deep, because our problem is far deeper than skin deep! This is pictured in Leviticus 13… the law of the leper… if the spot or blemish in question was more than skin deep… the priest pronounced the condition leprous, and that person was unclean and put out.

I hope God’s deep work in your heart is welcome to you. It might be a little painful when God “discovereth deep things out of darkness” in your life, but it is for your and my good. Noone is excepted from this or any of God’s truth.

Everything about being a Christian is deep. It starts “deep” when the seed of God’s word finds deep ground, it continues “deep” as we dig a deep foundation for our life with God’s word, and it stays “deep” as God launches our life out in deep waters as we follow him and he uses our lives to draw others to him also.

Might sound intimidating! But it’s not. And if you’re saved, you’d have it no other way “Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts”… hopefully God has done his wonders in the deep of your heart… and when he has accomplished that, deep down you will long for and resonate with the depth of God’s word and your Saviour’s love.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
