Do You See Jesus Through The Lattice?
See Jesus Through The Lattice!
Song of Solomon 2:9 “My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice.”
Song of Solomon is a truly unique book in the Bible, who’s flower unfurls quite magnificently, in sole splendour when contrasted with everything else this world and life has to offer “As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.”
The Bible is a sealed book to the unsaved and unsanctified… yes, anyone can and should read it, but until Christ breaks off its seals to your heart, as day springing forth in utter darkness, it will remain words on paper “Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures”
Without God we are as Genesis 1:2 describes “without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep”… let the Spirit of God as back then, now move upon the face of those deep dark waters.
I’ve got nothing to offer you in and of myself, just a beggar who found bread, just a sinner who Christ saved… but I invite you to “O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”
Different books open at different times and in different seasons of life, and in the love story of Solomon, a high point in a life brought so low by trying to find fulfillment outside of God… the glory of God dwells here.
Yes it’s a love story between a man and a woman, described in very poetic and impossible allegory at times, it can be very hard to draw from this story, and yet the most incredible nuggets of truth are revealed when God draws back the curtain into glory. The Bible says “but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth.”… how do we understand? “By faith we understand”
It’s so good to be a Christian, and no that doesn’t mean we escape the realities of life, but we have Christ in the realities of life drawing us closer and closer to himself… hence one of his many names… Emmanuel, which means “God with us”.
I know Christianity is the domain of beta males, money grubbing pastors, religious scams, hypocrisy, and for losers blah blah… cool, but I personally won’t let all that rubbish “there is much rubbish” turn me into less that what God has for me, and get to know Christ for yourself and the type of people he called and used and they had the most amazing lives ever… Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Samuel, Joseph, Peter, Paul, Stephen, Elijah, Elisha… Hannah, Ruth, Mary, Rahab… all people to aspire to.
Back on track…
In Song of Solomon 2 verse 4 he is called “beloved”… and not just that but “MY beloved”. I hope Jesus Christ isn’t someone else’s beloved, but your beloved, even if nooone else loves him, and truth be told as Christ said, many do not “And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.”
… And yet he is still standing. And although truth has fallen in our country, yet he still stands.
And he’s very much alive, and very much involved in our lives… and even if you can’t see him, he can see you, and he’s looking in at your life, and if you are his child, he’s keeping a very close eye on you “The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.”
But now to why I wrote this, a most marvellous truth where the Bible says “shewing himself through the lattice” … he shows himself and will show himself to you through the lattice!
You want to see Christ? Is he obscured from your view for now? Perhaps by your own sin. Perhaps by the darkness of this world…
Today, Jesus Christ shows himself through the lattice to you.
You know what a lattice is? It’s just a big bunch of crosses. More crosses than you can number. And you know what the lattice is? It’s the Word of God, which is full of crosses, all woven together all pointing us to the cross of Christ “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. ”
What an unbelievable book this is, the book of books, the words of life. All through it you see the cross of Christ… from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22… it’s crosses everywhere. Suddenly the book comes to life, and as alive as the love these two have for each other in the Song of Songs.
I see the cross of Christ when God clothes Adam and Eve, shedding innocent blood to cover their sin, all predicated on the promise of the Saviour’s seed.
I see the cross of Christ when Abel dies at the hands of his brother Cain, not because he did wrong, but because he did right, and Cain was so wrong, and the innocent suffered at the hands of the guilty.
I see the cross of Christ when Noah and his family are saved by building a big wooden ark, so many trees cut down, who give their life so many may live. You and I only live because of Noah’s ark, humanity risked extinction we were so bad, and still are “but Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord”.
I see the cross of Christ in how those boards of the ark were pitched within and without with pitch, showing the completeness of the salvation in Jesus Christ, our salvation is sealed in Christ, all that remains is us to seal our hearts and lives and minds and dreams and hopes to him.
I see the cross of Christ in how that unsightly vessel floated even above the high watermark of sin and wickedness, I see the cross in how Noah was miraculously preserved and saved not only himself but his family because he believed and trusted God.
I see the cross of Christ when Abraham takes his only begotten son up mount Moriah, believing in resurrection that he’d never seen ever happen and knew to be scientifically impossible, and yet seeing the ram caught in the thicket by his own thorns… a substitute provided by God “God will provide himself a lamb”.
I see the cross of Christ in Jacob’s ladder, that night he leaves home, with stones for his pillow but God stands above all his woes and consequences for his actions, making all the promises to him … promises only possible through the cross of Christ.
Look, the entire Bible is a lattice, it all connects through the cross, and for many, they cannot see Christ because they cannot see him through the crosses, and because they would never take up the cross as he commanded in their own life. Christianity will never truly be living breathing reality to you one second before you put your foot in the flooding Jordan in your own step of faith.
But for now, do you see him through the lattice? And it’s necessary to finish with a warning, because this is not the only time lattice is mentioned in scripture.
There was a wicked evil king in 2 Kings 1 who fell through the lattice! I hope you do not fall through, or fall out, but if you are walking all over the blood of Christ, as he definitely did, one day that lattice holding you up, God’s grace which you enjoy, but do not attribute to him or give him the reverence and due for… one day that will give out on you, and you will fall through the lattice “when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”
What was that evil king doing walking on a lattice? They aren’t meant to be walked on… and Christ’s blood was not shed so you could walk on it.
It’s a dangerous thing to walk on the lattice, and nobody can escape accountability for what you do with Christ. You can imagine him away. You can try to opt out. They’re luxuries you are afforded. But all the while, every step you take is walking on God’s earth, in either transgression or service, and the breath you have is God’s breath… and we are all going to be held accountable for what we did with Christ.
Jesus is worth knowing. He truly is. He can turn ashes into beauty. He can turn lamentation into the song of songs. He can and would give you a life truly worth living, of eternal purpose and consequence and glory. And we are without excuse. For although obscured… just as in this book, still Jesus does show himself through the lattice… the Bible is full of crosses, everywhere a cross… don’t let it all end up noughts for you for all the crosses.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
