Who Or What Put “Earth” In Your Well?
Genesis 26:15 “For all the wells which his father’s servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.”
Genesis 26:18 “And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
Genesis 26:19 “And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.”
Genesis 26 in the Holy Bible is about Isaac during a time of famine trying to follow Jesus Christ by faith. He’s always looking for water, and every place he goes he digs for it… because water is pretty essential for life!
Christian, if there is no water where you are at… you need to move to get it… and then dig down deep and keep digging as he did!
… Isaac had a father called Abraham. He’s a key guy in scripture, because God made all his promises to him and his seed to faith. Abraham loved God, as in actually did, as proved by his obedience to God, and God could trust him… and along the trail of his life here, Abraham dug many wells out, hard work, which he left behind for his son.
Our actions, and how deep we dig in our Christian life, has huge capacity to impact others around us, and the generations to come. How about leave behind some wells that someone could draw salvation from down your family line?
Isaac benefited from the digging his dad did. And we are no different as Christians today, we benefit so much from the digging of the forefathers of the faith, and we have such a wonderful legacy and opportunity to follow God that is built off the sacrifices of so many, and ultimately the sacrifice of Jesus Christ himself.
… then Abraham died in faith, and his son continued on, and in this chapter Isaac grows in his walk with the Lord, not without “hiccups” but the Bible says he “went forward” and God was with him.
Then here come the bad guys! The Philistines his neighbors envy him, as you do, and so they try to dry up and “stop” his walk with God by depriving him of water, and they fill in the perfectly good wells his dad had dug with “earth”. This same pattern is still repeating today.
I’ve always thought it was pretty stupid to fill in working wells! But when you’re an enemy of God most of what you do makes no sense and actually only hurts yourself in the end.
Nevertheless, Isaac had a situation to deal with now. He wasn’t welcome in the land he was in, and as he dug, it seemed like there was less place for him in the place God wanted him to be in! It can get like that in the Christian life, you follow God and it seems like there’s no place for you… and yet there is! And when God makes room for you… you like Isaac will have a real altar of testimony and praise!
See Isaac’s going to end up digging not just some old wells, but some of his own too… and while we benefit from others God also wants to establish your own testimony of God’s provision and protection and proof of himself to you in your life.
So Isaac’s going to have his own “watershed” moment… but the key here is that he doesn’t let anyone or anything deter him from the necessity of water.
Because if you as a Christian do not have water, and your life is holding no water, you’re in bad shape. And if you’re in trying to find water phase indefinitely in your life… then you don’t have time to do much else in life. Until Isaac got water, he was extremely limited in life. It’s sad that when we as Christians should have lives impacting others, we are still trying to find the waterhole ourselves.
Have you found the waterhole yet? Have you found the fountain and spring of living water? Jesus is that, as he told the woman at the well “the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”
And the Bible says in Isaiah 12 “Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.” …I hope you’ve experienced the pure joy of salvation! …a joy that as Jesus said “no man taketh from you”. If you haven’t, you’re really missing out.
But just for a minute of your time, I’d like for you to think about where your Christian life is at right now, if indeed it has actually ever been birthed. Many people become Christians through going to church, getting involved at church, doing the religious deal baptism membership attendance etc… far fewer have entered Christian life through being “born again” as Jesus said is mandatory to see and enter the kingdom of God “the strait gate”.
But when you get saved, that flow of water that joyously springs forth in your heart and soul can very easily be stopped. The grapes of the Christian life are most tender, and the foxes want to spoil the vines as Solomon’s song says… and thus we must sometimes dig and dig and don’t be put off digging for water if we are to survive and thrive in the life following Christ.
Just accept also that if you are following Christ, people will want to stop you. People will be envious of what they could have but never would be themselves and just don’t want you to be that with them either. Satan wants you stopped. Even your own flesh with it’s ungodly desires and appetites want to stop you. And the way you will be stopped is by cutting you off from water. Many Christians have withered on the vine these days, maybe because they were never in.
So many Christians today are so filled up with career, house, home, job, sport, hobbies, recreation, interests, activities, friends, catchups, weddings, on and on, … EARTH… and while much of this isn’t wrong in and of itself… we can become so filled up with “earth” stuff, we have no time for our heavenly Father. And yet our Father is in heaven, the Bible says our conversation is in heaven, the Bible says we are seated in heavenly places… and the heavenly kingdom which is coming is what we should be looking toward and investing our life, resources and physical and spiritual capital in.
The Bible says in Colossians 3:1,2 “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
And this is what Isaac was trying to do in his life and leading his family, even while he had his own family dramas going on with one of his sons getting involved with ungodly women, even while the neighboring Philistines didn’t like having him around and would rather see him gone… plenty of people will want to see the back of you if you get hot for Jesus!
Finally also, when Isaac redug the old wells, he called them what they’d always been called. There is a lot of redefining, reimagining, reworking truth and the Bible and things of God going on. If you ever want water, you’ll need to get back to calling it as God calls it. Sin is sin. Right is right. Wrong is wrong. The devil is going to the lake of fire. And salvation is still through Jesus Christ alone. Start calling things as God does and go from fighting him to trusting and obeying him and it’ll be amazing how much water will start flowing through your life again!
… And so don’t let earth fill up your life and relegate you to the role of just another hamster running on Satan’s wheel! Don’t let anyone, anything stop your walk with God! You may ask… with what do I dig the earth out? Well, God left behind a pretty good digging tool… the word of God, that’ll clean the well out! And yes… it may get a little tough all of it… but it was in the valley that Isaac’s servants found the springing water! Don’t let anyone stop you from getting water in your life. Bring it into your house, your home, your marriage, your life! … You wouldn’t want your house without running water… why let the house of your body, which should be the temple of God, run dry?

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
