Do You Have An Ear To Hear What The Spirit Is Saying Unto The Churches?
Revelation 3:22 “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. ”
This recurrent verse extracted from the final letter to the final church of Laodicea in the book of Revelation could be one of those most needed sermons in our generation… “Do you have an ear to hear?”
Because most do not have an ear to hear what God is saying to them through his word. And they do not hear, because they refuse what they hear… and now cannot hear… exactly as God told Isaiah they would, as Jesus quoted they were, and John wrote they did.
Even in our time, we still do not lack for professing Christians and church goers… but we definitely lack for ears that are capable of hearing and responding to and obeying God’s word.
One of the Bible’s proofs of a believer as a child of God is whether they hear God’s word or not.
Not “hear” as in physically hear the words… anyone can physically hear… but a different kind of hearing… spiritual perception of the Holy Spirit’s voice calling and commanding you by name.
Don’t worry about other mirages of false hope, this is the mightiest miracle Jesus could do in our generation… to give us ears to hear and obey his word in our own lives!
Has God ever called you? Do you even know what that means? Every true Christian does. God called Moses personally in Exodus 3 and Moses heard and responded. God called Samuel personally in 1 Samuel 3 and Samuel heard and responded. Hbu?
When I call my dog, his ears perk up to me calling his name. He runs to me as if to say “Here am I!” In like manner, when a shepherd calls his sheep, as Jesus said, the sheep hear his voice, they know that voice and they respond to it.
And did you know, that if strangers call out to sheep it’s as if nobody said a thing to them! But if their shepherd calls out to them, their ears flick and they turn around in recognition of their shepherd’s voice. … is that your relationship to the voice of God’s word?
For many people, the call of God upon their life is like a living person trying to talk to a dead person. Because we are in fact spiritually stone dead in sins until “Let there be light” breathes life in your spirit and soul, as Jesus said “While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light.”
Maybe you are so stone deaf to God that the voice of my writing might as well be in Mandarin… and you wonder what that Christian that God has inevitably placed in your life is on.
It’s a precious thing for God to call you by name! …for the Creator to take personal interest in you and your life, to see and enter the kingdom of God. Many people forfeit this birthright in much the same way Esau did, to them God’s calling has no value, and God’s voice just an inconvenience, a bother, a rude interruption and unwelcome rousing out of a selfish, sin and stuff absorbed life.
Jesus himself said many are called but few are chosen… because the hearing of faith must combine with his holy calling otherwise what good did it?
I hope you’ve heard his voice. I hope you know it. I hope his voice causes as much joy as Solomon’s did his bride in the Song of songs.
To many people I’ve met, sharing God’s word I might as well be talking to a coffin. Not because I am worth hearing, I know I’m nothing, but because Jesus Christ is worth it, but they do not, will not and now cannot hear.
Maybe you’re just a sheep gotten astray lost in the wilderness, maybe you’re not just flat not saved. I don’t know.
But it’s clear that salvation isn’t getting religious, it’s not church attendance, it’s not getting baptized, it’s not doing good… it’s responding to the call of Jesus Christ, the reception of the word of his gospel breathing life into your spirit and your soul, transforming your existence from inside out…
Maybe God called you once, or is calling you and you’re fighting him, scared of what others think… who knows. But what we do know is one day there is a last call, best respond with “Speak Lord for thy servant heareth” before you never hear the call again.

Hi, my name is Joseph Zadow. I am a 33 y/o Bible Blogger from Adelaide, South Australia. God’s word is the best thing that we can be given, and once we have it and know it for ourselves it is both a privilege and responsibility to share it with others! We are blessed to be a blessing! I am a sinner (for sure!) saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. And it’s Jesus Christ’s faith far more than my own! Because he is faithful. I believe the Bible is the word of God, and by God’s grace I anchor my soul to it. My destination is heaven. As they say, this world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through… although most of the time I feel more like I’m hangin’ by a thread in Jericho! I love playing sports, I currently work on an orchard and one of my main hobbies/interests is growing vegetables. I love writing. I’m always happy to talk, so feel free to leave a comment on my blog or through email! My blog is inspired by Isaiah 2, and Isaiah’s vision of the last days when all nations will flow unto the Lord’s house, in a future time where everyone will love to hear God’s word and walk in light of Lord. And it is my hope that my blog will “strengthen the brethren” and “feed my sheep” as Jesus told Peter. Whether you visit once or regularly, I hope my blog is of some benefit to you on your journey of life! It’s a long journey, but with Christ you will make it to the other side.
